ShB addresses the First, not the Source. We're going to the place that the previous Warriors of Darkness tried to 'save'. Their home was overwhelmed with light thanks to its own Warriors of Light essentially beating Darkness entirely on their world, to the point where Light started consuming it.

In short, we're going on a holiday to a different world (which will no doubt lead to issues manifesting on Eorzea in our absence) and becoming Warriors of Darkness to combat their Light problem. You can even hear Arbert's "Still it came to this" dialogue in the new trailer, as well as new dialogue from Arbert as well, so we'll no doubt meet the previous WoD's or learn more about them in some shape or form along the way, likely near the start as it was their actions that inadvertently led to the fate of the First.

Or through Role Quests, since hashing out the backstory of the WoDs is their purpose.

I doubt that. We didn't know it at the time but that sub-plot turned out to be extremely relevant. To degrade the past WoD's varying import to the main story into mere role-quests would make little sense given they were essentially the instigators/witnesses to what befell the first and what we need to cure. I highly doubt that their reference/cameo/plot will be relegated from the MSQ. It's certainly possible, and they can play to the fact that the WoD's themselves all fulfil roles (given it's pretty much a full party of five), but again, to restrict it to role-quests would be a pretty odd choice. Then again, they could easily do both. As such, it'd be like how Edda appeared at the beginning of the MSQ and her optional side-plot unveiled via dungeons and PotD.

As said earlier, I fully expect we'll get a brief glimpse of them near the beginning just to set the tone of the journey and what we're setting off to do, give or take some room in the middle or some revelations at the end if it furthers the plot, but to confine that to role quests? Bleh.

It was stated when the Role Quests were introduced that you will be required to do atleast one of the four quest lines for the MSQ. You can do the other three any time you want after but you will need to see atleast one perspective during the MSQ.

Yes, but that doesn't have any direct implications regarding the MSQ other than you need to have gotten the story to X first. I'd liken that to some portion of the MSQ unlocking something that is then used as a catalyst for Role Quests, like a specific area, NPC or lore-related milestone - as opposed to the possibility that you have to progress the story to X point so that the grander Role Quests can be tied to the MSQ hip.

Again, could be wrong, but I wouldn't be overly happy if something like, say, Warriors of Darkness were a Role-Quest-Specific aspect when their unintentional instigation of the 'flood' is such a sore story point on the first.

It seems like the role quests are going to a lot more bound to the MSQ than job quests have been. They're not going to be off in their own little bubble with no impact on the main story.

I'm picturing that it will be more like a chapter of the MSQ itself - perhaps you reach a certain point in the story, and then the next quest you need to complete before proceeding is a role quest - ie. Warrior of Darkness flashback interlude.

How is Zodiark losing in this bloodsoaked world?
It is not the Source, but the First Shard, that is overwhelmed by a Flood of Light. However, it is implied the Flood of Light may be causing the aether on the Source to thin out, which Solus speculates will have a special effect on the Black Rose.

I shudder to think what plunging this into darkness would entail. The Warriors of Darkness tried to wipe out an entire world, mass genocide. How can the story follow in their footsteps? How can we darken the world when nearly everyone dying happened in the "world with too much light"? Am I missing something?

I think the whole implication is that the Warrior of Light's exploits are tipping the scales too close to light and putting the Ascians' plans in jeopardy. Given the Empire continues to cause chaos (as it was intended to), I have little fear it's in danger of falling to a Flood of Light, and said Flood would be harder to trigger on the Source than the First (as the latter is naturally more inclined toward Light than the Source, which is implicitly neutral by default).
