Abbyssea killed XI for me..Played XI back when it came out on PS2. I stopped play XI because I didn't have the time for it back when the third expansion came out. Briefly played it sometime a few years back but I will forever love vanilla XI over what it has become today. It holds a special place in my heart til this day. I know it's an unpopular opinion but I liked XIV Legacy more than 2.0. While I still enjoy XIV as what it has become today, apart of me misses 1.xx.
as for XIV I don't miss 1.0 so much but I definitely miss 1.20 to 1.23.. and I definitely preferred it over ARR.
1.2 was pretty much a totally different game to 1.0 and improved so much it was basically a 2.0 in itself in the eyes of a lot of people..
I remember during the beta test people were basically calling ARR version 3.0 because of that
Honestly if they continued along the path they were going from 1.20 to 1.23 I reckon a hell of a lot more of my friends would still be playing and loving it. But instead they warcrafted it and well everyones got bored and left.. Very few left playing at this point.
In many ways XI was even more casual than XIV is. For a long time i only played XI 2 nights with work and studies but you really didnt need massive time commitments to make progress. most of its endgame could be done in around an hour. limbus nyzul assault, salvage, einherjar, some dynamis zones.. you really didnt need that much time..
Part of why i consider it more casual though is because XIV almost demands you play.. take a week off. fall behind on your progression or tomestones no weekly drops for you..... where in XI you could bugger off on holiday come back and not feel behind..
It was my first MMO. Got it on my xbox and I was killing bees as a Mithra and someone tried to ask me if I was new but I couldn't figure out how to type to them so I walked around them in circles trying to get my point across.
Kinda wish I'd kept playing it when I got my PC.
One of my earliest memories of my noobness was thinking I could dodge the mob's attacks, and so I was dancing all around the bunnies in Ronfaure. When my friend came to check on me, they were like 'What are you doing??!'. :PIt was my first MMO. For any actual leveling progression the ONLY way you could level in the beginning was multiple hour long parties grinding enemies. As a relatively undesirable class/race it took hours to find a party and then I just had to milk the everliving hell out of it as much as I could. This meant 4-6 hour sessions at least. Between school and work I did not have that kind of time.
I never got to endgame so I couldn't comment.
WHERE IS THIS KETTLE EVERYONE KEEPS INTRODUCING ME TO?

I am one. Had Excalibur, Aegis and bard horn before I quit at end of wings.

Back in the day. Best game I've ever played.

He probably got stuck at the dunes and raged quit after being trained a few times and no raise, as well as never set homepoint at selbina or in dunes itself.
I always loved how ffxi deterred most casual players. Rarely ever had a frustrating group after dunes.

I still remember a Yagudo chasing me all the way back to town, killing me RIGHT BEFORE the zone line.
Ah good times it was.
