I'm not saying Ifrit/Mog sword are garbage, but considering just how easy it is to get a weapon that is arguably better for a tank they look kind of dumb.

Regardless of current weapons, the materia system as it stands will probably be incompatible with the game going forward.

Nope. I'm actually someone who kind of likes this stupid game and wants a reason to actually play it in the future.
Pretty sure GLA has no trouble keeping hate anymore, so much that it would depend on rage materia on weapon as well. The auto attack HP recovery acts as a pseudo regen. Much more desirable for almost all tanking scenarios. Also it is something you cannot achieve through materia, giving it a unique purpose outside the realm of crafted gear.

Even as lancer I've been deep in the red with tanks that know what they're doing on Ifrit. I know it's worse for Thm. I haven't personally had any trouble holding hate but that doesn't mean people aren't holding back. More hate means more damage your DPS can do which means less healing required cause mobs die quicker.

The healing proc would have to be pretty god damn good but, again, that's kind of a side point and doesn't really matter. Even if Ifrit/Mogblade blew every possible crafted pos out of the water it'd still be bad because that just means weapon materia is useless for gladiator. Your whole thing about blue items not being meldable but green items being ok is completely arbitrary and if blue items are good enough eventually everyone has them and materia is useless again! woo.

From what i have tested MRD / GLA are now very similar in holding hate, MRD just edges it as they do more dmg and are easier to manage they also can use flash/provoke just like a GLA can. I have found that GLA takes a lot more button mashing to keep up with MRD so may not be the best choice for the larger battles. However with the introduction of jobs I do believe that PLD will be king of tanks.

MRD's flash is NOT AoE. Glad is still best tank.
