I doubt that WoW is the reason for a potential bestial race. We already have one in the form of Raen and Xaela. Chances are a potential second bestial race would still be largely human in terms of their features but boast a few animal traits to make them more distinct. There has also been quite a lot of people asking for more masculine options for character customisation over the years. So it isn't as if the demand isn't there.

Although I never liked BDO, gender-locked classes made me like it even less. Technically it had male/female adapted classes, which was ok, but in some cases there were pure locks.

Au Ra is a beast race like lalafell is tall >.> lol. Ronso, Charr, Lupis, Pantera.. things like that are beast race (alibet Lupis and Pantera have strong humandoid features, but still fairly beastly more so than Au Ra and Miqote imo).

Please, no. I actually took a pause on playing WoW's current expansion because I was spending time playing their previous expansion unlocking allied races that required the content from that previous expansion.

That said, in FFXIV, the fact that you can use jump potion to skip main story quests as well as being able to use all jobs in one character with any race would make such a concept easier to do than in WoW. Still, I'd prefer not having to do that with race.

I don't think it could work here unless the quest also offered a Fantasia at the end... in which case I guess it could?
It's not the same thing as the heroic classes. You actually have to play the game and do the specified content to unlock a particular allied race and not just boost your character to meet a level requirement.

But if you're saying Orc-sy and Tauren then yeah, they belong in WoW we don't need a Troll like they have. But players from WoW who liked those "other" visuals don't really have that in FFXIV unless Hrothgar is what we might think in a "Ronso" like race, in which case it's still more fabulous than WoW's but far more towards that "other" than say Viera, Roe (he gets really fabulous, trust me lol), and others.

Yeah the really exaggerated races like Tauren and Trolls don't need to be in this game. They would stick out like a sore thumb in FFXIV, while the races we have now more or less fit together. I would prefer for FFXIV races to be more on the human side, which I think they can do for a Ronso-like race since they aren't that far away from what we already have except in the face and horn. FFXIV doesn't need to be a copy of WoW with really cartoonish races, and it doesn't need to take after FFXI with its gender locked races.

If male Viera were unlockable via a quest that gives fantasia at the end, I would be ok with that since it means I don't have to spend any extra money to change into one. But how would a quest like that work though? Would we have to fight bosses or grind reputation like for beast tribes?

Not to mention a lot of people who were jaded by gender locks left silently because if you spoke up, you were called names absolutely unrepeatable on these forums.

Well I'd agree the art style of WoW at a minimum doesn't belong in FFXIV lol, I'm not sure the extent you mean on exaggeration as we may disagree there but to be honest we could totally agree on that too lol (since you said Ronso could fit, and I believe that as well). So I'm just going to say we might be using different words but have a similar agreement haha, at least for now .

For a male Viera unlock I'd say it would work such that male Viera are heavily damaged from the fire and the rest are off fighting the Garleans maybe. You reach a certain point in the MSQ where you help the male Viera return to the forest and at that point you get a free fantasia and can become a male Viera. Some dialog shifts from you saving the male viera to you saving your own kind, but everyone moves on none the wiser.

Although I'm not sure why they'd need to lock it behind a quest except maybe to encourage players to play the game? Or some elaborate excuse to make a fantasia free? lol. I can see it workings, I'm just not sure it needs to be that way except for some very particular "I want to tell the story this way" reasoning. Which I guess is fine, it's just different haha.

Also I came up with, imo, the:

    Beast Race Test

Is what you're refrencing a beast like race or just human with some attachments, here we have the beast race test.

Assuming the person isn't into furry stuff lol, put the race into a subligar - guage the response. If you feel like a perv it must not be a beast race! lol Or in other words if they look at it like as if they were a person in their undies, not a beast race.

Ronso, Charr, Lupis, Tauren, etc, in a subligar gets no reaction from me, I don't feel like I'm looking at a naked dude - I'm looking at a ripped beast.

Au Ra, Roe, Miqote etc, etc, in a subligar.. I feel like a perv (extreme word choice maybe but you know what I mean, looking at a nearly naked person).

Some variations based on unique preferences, but I feel the vast majority could follow this test lol.

Or think of it this way, every photo of Khimari/Ronso is a bunch of people in their loin cloth/chest bindings, if your boss walked by it'd be a little weird maybe but no biggie. Now imagine your boss walking by with an image of Roe or Au Ra in the exact same sort of tribal subligar clothes lol. Or worse Viera in chest bindings and loin cloth lol. Think of Viera, it's just about as revealing as the Ronso clothes but it feels so different. There is a disconnect from beast race and "human w/ a few changes" that I believe can be described in this moment (for most people, I realize some people have exceptions XD). Therefore, imo, all FFXIV's current race choices fail the beast race test (including Roe and Au Ra). Meanwhile I'd pass Ronso, Charr, and Tauren instantly for both genders while Lupis would get a slow pass lol (the males imo instantly, but the females push it a little although in comparison to FFXIV's other races I'd still pass them).

I suppose I should have been slightly clearer:

I would fully welcome a more bestial (supposedly) race like whatever this Hrothgar is. But if we only get them as males, and only female viera, that is not acceptable. Hrothgar are not a substitute for male viera. Just as female viera would not be a substitute for female Hrothgar.

So basically - I agree with you. But I would rather we get male viera instead of two gender-locked races.

It will be funny if the new race turns out to be a fancy lion instead of a bestial one like everybody is expecting XD
