If you'd just said hello, the whole thing might have gone smoothly and nobody would have had any issues with you at all. Instead the group got bogged down in an unnecessary discussion that left people with a negative opinion of you. Is that really "breaking the ice" and making the group more comfortable and friendly with each other? I think it's achieving the exact opposite, and making you -rightly or wrongly - perceived as the troublemaker at the source of it.
