Is it wrong to run Castrum Abania as a tank at ilvl 272

Because tanks don't get killed as easily as the healers and DPS do. That's kind of the whole point of the role.

How does this translate in to "I don't need to get as much gear because I'm a tank"? Do you not know how the game works?

Are you woefully unaware that most dungeon mobs are designed to specifically hurt tanks, and not dps and healers? You seriously don't think "oh maybe the thing that gets hit the most is in the most need of good defence stats"?

Are you one of those people who blames healers when a tank gets one-shot by a tank buster?

It really wasn't. I did that, it wasn't bad.

You wouldn't be saying this if you ever had an undergeared healer in the vault who kept getting one shot to the first boss' targeted buster (and no I'm not joking or exaggerating, it one hit KO the healer because due to their gear they did not have enough HP to survive it) and then having no healer and no one to raise so you wipe 4 times on the first boss until you get lucky RNG that the healer finally doesn't get targeted by it.

THEN come back and tell me it is okay for people to be undergeared.

what? remember we are on the internet, people often type things that are untrue to troll or just not knowing better. I do not know what to say if people can't handle running a dungeon more then 4 times to get some gear they need to do the next one, or simply buy it. This game literally hands you gear and people still enter dungeons under geared, I am very confused on this problem. Why is there no ilevel requirements for stuff? -.-

There's not even an item level requirement for Castum Abania.

As a side note, I completed up to The Swallows Compass in 290 job quest gear on my war alt with no problem. Of course, I had to have friends take me in to bypass ilvl req, but I didn't have any problems surviving or holding aggro.

And if you did that in a pug you would not pass the first boss. Please do not willfully under gear expecting people to carry you when they can't. We are not saying it is impossible, but what is more likely is the 3 people you pug with will not be able to handle it. Also this:

You promoting people to enter stuff undergeared needs to stop. You spreading misinformation needs to stop. What I mean by misinformation is implying people that gear 380 for ex is like gearing for Castrum Abania as a 270. It is not the same at all. The only elitism I see is from you, thinking you are better then everyone else for saying you need better then 270 gear and somehow skill offsets it. Yes skill does offset it to AN EXTENT!!! just because YOU know what to do in i270 gear does not mean the healer you puged with can handle it, they may be new, and your 2 dps teammates might not be up to par. So do not be part of the problem and gear appropriately.

Informing people on the reality is not fear mongering people, how about you stop spreading your biased anecdotes?

I cannot believe this thread is still going on. Sure, Abania is doable in 270 gear...with the right people. I'm not going to trust the healer in 270 gear to keep me alive, though, because I don't know how they play. I mean, I don't even trust healers in current gear to keep me alive when I'm DPSing.

Also, you keep bringing up how you can easily get to 60 using Ironworks. GGL is a lot easier than Abania...and honestly, I've leveled everything except WHM through HW using Augmented Ironworks, but I can't say it's the best thing I've ever done, and when I bring my tanks through I'm probably going to craft some gear because I know I'm a terrible tank. A decent healer, a competent DPS, but literally a disaster of a tank. I'm going to need the extra stats from that gear.

Read the rest of the paragraph you quoted from. I already explained it was incorrect.

Though perhaps "useless" was the wrong word to paraphrase it as in the first place... they said they only ever got earrings from the guaranteed drops. Which might happen if you only ran each dungeon once and (by luck) got the earrings each time, because it's a new and different item. But you're just as likely to get decent equipment, and if you ran the same dungeon again you would be guaranteed to get something other than the earrings as long as you were still carrying them.

It mostly depends. If you're riding tank stance and properly CDing tank busters in that dungeon (First boss's wheel spin, second bosses's stab, third bosses's whatchamacallit that inflicts vuln/bleed/etc) and cding during mobs then tanking at lower ilvls isn't bad. Now if you're trying to tank out of stance, not CDing anything at that ilvl then the blame will partly fall upon you. Your defense goes up dramatically from 270 -> 275+ range, so if you tank at lower ilvls making sure you properly CD is mandatory to not be a burden.

In this scenario based on the information you've given though, your ilvl wouldn't have made much of a difference. If the healer's gonna straight up ignore healing you or minimize their heals on you, they have NO ONE but themselves to blame when you die from lack of healing. You also can't be blamed if you die because the healer was jailed and the dps didn't break them out, since I also know the boss does 2 tankbusters during that phase.

Also, what's "unpractical" about pentamelded level 20 gear? You're using lower level materia so the melds are easier, and the materia is way cheaper to boot. Not bothering with it just shows plain laziness.

How about...you literally can't? At level 20 you haven't been able to learn advanced melding and no piece of lv20 gear has five materia slots so...you literally can't. Now, if you want to talk about fully melding gear while leveling...yeah, I do that.

Considering I wasn't item level to do it with a pug, kind of a moot point. Either way I'd consider it proven that an undergeared tank who knows how to play can handle it quite easily. But you're taking my comment out of context. OP asked if it was wrong to go into Castrum Abania in 272. There is not a required item level so it seems to me that SE is OK with you entering Castrum Abania in whatever gear you're in when you unlock it, and provided an example where I was very undergeared myself but still able to complete content. Now if you want to claim "only in that party" - OK, fair enough, but it can't really be proven one way or the other.
