modems werent something people even really had when i first started out
i remember dos....yeah good old dos

To be honest I thought more people would biteI really wanted to talk about how peoples computers run ffxiv. /sigh this was in no way a thread to try and brag. I am sorry if it came off that way I'm sorry.
yeah my first computer was dos prompt and full of Sierra games, Leisure Suit Larry, Kings Quest, Roger Wilco or something, Monkey Islands 1, 2 after. lol search for the king. But yeah I had modems when they first came out. People would have BBS' you would call them and go to their bulletin board site. It is where a lot of things we use today came from.
I've got a cabient full of 386sx,486 and pentium motherboards, along with plenty of vintage video and sound cards. Even have a quad 486 compaq machine as an endtable! Just can't part with the stuff
I use my gaming machine I mentioned for ffXI also, so if I do upgrade I'll probably try to stuff a radeon X1950XT into it alongside a GTX560, and dual boot with XP using the radeon and w7 using the GTX (I'm not sure how well that will work, since my current board only has one pcie-x16 slot). After lots of testing with FFXI, I found that the x1950 with 2007 drivers has superior image quality and no strange slowdown issues compared to newer radeons, and all geforce cards. XIV won't even start with an x1k series card though
That latest nvidia driver really helped with the low framerates, but the image quality is still terrible.
Wow the new 400 and 500 series Nvidia cards sucked that bad for FFXI? Have you tried to use the launcher or mess with the registry settings to make it look better?I've got a cabient full of 386sx,486 and pentium motherboards, along with plenty of vintage video and sound cards. Even have a quad 486 compaq machine as an endtable! Just can't part with the stuff

I was also wondering about how the game runs on high-end machines. I'm particularly interested about how it runs for that guy using an intel SSD. I find that slowdowns related to loading dynamic content are really annoying to me. It happens quite a lot on my current machine with XIV, and it seems to also on your machine. I'm wondering if this is a function of the video drivers, so if anyone with a radeon card could add a comment...
Loading slowdown also happens on XI with my current machine, but it only causes maybe 100ms pauses. On my previous athlonXP machine with a radeon 9800, there were no loading-related slowdowns. I was very disappointed to see that model loading causes whole-second pauses on the Playstation2 version of XI.

Yes, and before the latest driver, people were getting 4 to 5 fps with only a few characters onscreen.
Of course, I tried every setting available, but the image quality on my GTS250 took a gigantic dive after driver 185.something. It was best on the "special ffxi beta" driver 174.something, matching the quality of the radeon. I switched to the latest 266 driver, though, since it can maintain capped framerate with maximum characters onscreen, whereas the 174 driver drops to 24fps or so.
Well, my computer is just my "run of the mill" computer until PS3 release and even then it will still be my "run of the mill" daily use computer. Once PS3 release I'll be on Console...

currently benchmark at 4385 for FFXIV...would be higher in xFire Hyper Flood on OC with single card, overheats
Currently Windows 7 rates me as a 7.3/7.9 on performance...good enough for me
FFXIV runs absolutely flawless, no skip, jitter or lag anywhere I go...just like a console...like a movie
This actually opens a far more reaching topic...all this PC power for flawless play when a simple PS3 for $399 will do exactly the same thing in months to come. Something to think about really, play on PS3 on a 55" HDTV on the couch or play on a $3000 PC? Weird huh that the Cell is still better than what PC can do?
Comparing computers is pretty much mute...its a Console designed game...once PS3 release PC users will have to have massive power to keep up...its NOT a PC game and never will be

DOS was the bomb.. still is i think
lol thanks for the caps.. but yeah it really doesnt hurt :P I actually really enjoy it. Considering the stuff I was into for years, it was a welcome change to spend my money on something that wont kill me. I was more or less shocked to why you said that thats all. Besides I worked for 2 months and saved up and bought it.. you make it sound like I bought a rocket ship.. its only 3k lol..
