I wish they can really have the Blue Mage in this game (along with Geomancer). I also wish they give the blue Mage a whip (Quistis FF8) or whipblade (Seven FFT0) so that there will be a new weapon type in the game.

I think the gunblade will be given to the FF14 unique job that Yoshi wants to do.

So far they haven't, especially with Ivalice (it's treated similarly to Crystal Tower. Is only referencing the game it's from, but is in no way the same place. Has its own lore, etc) and it would be very silly of the FFXIV team to make some parts of the official lore book irrelevant, as well as important plot-points within the story (Bahamut and summons in general, as well as Hydaelyn explaining her history in 3.2).

I would imagine if they did blue mage for ffxiv it would be something similar to red mage.
Like a scimitar and some sort of magic catalyst in the offhand

So at least for the first two, yes. The Red Mage melee combo is inspired by a real-world fencing style in which fencers would hold a lantern behind their head (this was in places where fencing was banned, forcing young men to practice fencing at night in dark alleyways and other hidden areas). The Dark Knight weapon combos were also another style inspired from a real-world source despite using the wrong weapon for it (DRK greatsword =/= zweihander that the style is intended for). As for the Summoner book and I think all the pre-SB casters in general, it was just a case of preferring more generic weapon attacks for melee.

And again, I've wielded them in reality, not just blades with gun attachments, but also blades which would've been deemed "better designed" with a gun built in. They're all painful and annoying to use and even the best made ones were basically exploding bayonets. For a Garlean job, maybe it'd be interesting to see, but not really for the more tradition Blue Mage.

It's totally possible that Blue Mages could come from Thavnair, with Thavnairian weapons to wield. It's just a theory, though.
Thavnair does offer a lot of possibilities for the more popular jobs, and I even used it for my Blue Mage concept in my sig below (#shamelessplug). If we ever were going to get a more tradition Blue Mage, I think this would be our best bet.

Scimitar just because they are beautiful weapons and we need another sword wielder that (hopefully) uses it. Maybe full on dual wielding Do'Urdan style.

I like rdm but it doesn't feel like a rdm, its too similar to blm, esp since the sword effectively becomes a pointy staff during casting and you can, and frankly many rdm do, just ignore the physical dps rotations. It also has no sword enhancement spells, no dots and no enfeebles. It's basically a blm with a bonus cure spell in a red tabard.

I am hoping blu doesn't go in the same direction. It's obviously not going to be as well done and beautifully complicated as it was in xi since this game is the most dumbed down ff title to date, aside from Mystic Quest but I really hope they let blu keep its identity in more than just aesthetics.

That's wishful thinking lol; we know that Yoshi P. and the way FFXIV is deigned we would never see anything along those lines. If anything I see the Blue Mage wielding something that will completely take us off guard... and Blue Magic and such would be learned from the main character that's part of the BLU story line. That will more than likely be a dude from Vana`diel that's going to mock us with that sexy old BLU Af =D.

But maybe not, I can always stay optimistic.

We have more chances of seeing these classes before a blue mage:

    - Time Battlemage
    - Oracle
    - Dancer
    - Geomancer
    - Some sort of gunblade class

Even a necromancer is more possible than a blue mage at this point.

We will see this November probably.

Except zweihander is a great sword...

Ultimately swords are divided into few general categories. Short swords for single-handed blades, bastard swords (ones that can be used with either one hand thanks to being light enough, or two hands to add the second hands strength thanks to the weight still being enough and the handle being extended), longsword (two-handers), and great swords (ones that need to be used with two hands as well, but even larger than longsword with length almost the same as their users height). You could also add daggers/knives and fencing swords there, but meh.

Zweihander, claymore and all sorts of other two-handed swords are all great swords. Heck. The name Zweihander is literally "two-hander" in german. The reason why dark knights don't have ONLY zweihander is quite simple, really. It would at most be a design for two or three weapons. Otherwise everything would look just about the same. And that in an RPG is way too cheap.

I'm not going to talk about your supposed experience with gunblades though, since you have not posted anything that can in any way be responded to. No photo, no information on what they were (replica, museum exhibits, 'fan-made' gunblades, professional blacksmiths products etc.). As I said, there were many normal swords that were really horribly balanced and problematic to use in real life, even though swords are supposedly just a cutting/piercing blade with a hilt. Heck, there are knives that are worth nothing but a visit in the trash bin even now...So without knowing what exactly kind of gunblade you speak of...it's like throwing a dice.

And I'm saying, and still standing by, that it's entirely possible to make proper gunblades. It's just not going to be as straightforward as making a gun or a sword.
