It's nothing but references. Especially the Ivalice story, the timeline in FFXIV's Ivalice (FFT to FF12) is actually backwards from the real Ivalice.

I wish they can really have the Blue Mage in this game (along with Geomancer). I also wish they give the blue Mage a whip (Quistis FF8) or whipblade (Seven FFT0) so that there will be a new weapon type in the game.
I think the gunblade will be given to the FF14 unique job that Yoshi wants to do.
"Is adventuring not supposed to be glorious? I thought it was supposed to be glorious." - Vath Deftarm, Dravanian Hinterlands, An Acquired Taste
"That's a fine accomplishment lad. Young and lusty as you are, no doubt you'll achieve much and more in the years to come. I look forward to hearin' all your deeds." - Jonathas, Master of the Rolls, Old Gridania

I would imagine if they did blue mage for ffxiv it would be something similar to red mage.
Like a scimitar and some sort of magic catalyst in the offhand

Scimitar just because they are beautiful weapons and we need another sword wielder that (hopefully) uses it. Maybe full on dual wielding Do'Urdan style.
I like rdm but it doesn't feel like a rdm, its too similar to blm, esp since the sword effectively becomes a pointy staff during casting and you can, and frankly many rdm do, just ignore the physical dps rotations. It also has no sword enhancement spells, no dots and no enfeebles. It's basically a blm with a bonus cure spell in a red tabard.
I am hoping blu doesn't go in the same direction. It's obviously not going to be as well done and beautifully complicated as it was in xi since this game is the most dumbed down ff title to date, aside from Mystic Quest but I really hope they let blu keep its identity in more than just aesthetics.

That's wishful thinking lol; we know that Yoshi P. and the way FFXIV is deigned we would never see anything along those lines. If anything I see the Blue Mage wielding something that will completely take us off guard... and Blue Magic and such would be learned from the main character that's part of the BLU story line. That will more than likely be a dude from Vana`diel that's going to mock us with that sexy old BLU Af =D.I am hoping blu doesn't go in the same direction. It's obviously not going to be as well done and beautifully complicated as it was in xi since this game is the most dumbed down ff title to date, aside from Mystic Quest but I really hope they let blu keep its identity in more than just aesthetics.
But maybe not, I can always stay optimistic.

A fork.

A mage pistol like in FF X-2

We have more chances of seeing these classes before a blue mage:
- Time Battlemage
- Oracle
- Dancer
- Geomancer
- Some sort of gunblade class
Even a necromancer is more possible than a blue mage at this point.
We will see this November probably.

Someone hasnt seen the leaked datamining about BlueMageActions files.
Its a bit more complex than that even. (And the complexity has no lore based explanation, only a real world one)
For example, (warning, I might be misremembering which titles these were, but i think these were the right titles.)
The creation of FFX was based on the idea of being a distant future of FF7. So FF7 is losely a prequel from the perspective of FF10.
But from the perspective from FF7, FF10 is not a sequel to FF7.
This is because they are made by different creators.
FF10s writer thinks of it as a sequel, despite the FF7 writers not thinking of it as such.
Yoshida brought this up, as an example, because he feels similar, and went ahead with this kind of thinking acknowledging that its not really "canon", but sort of is in his mind, but only partially.
There is a lose connection to the IDEA of what the other FFs are, but they arent ACTUALLY, as is, the past of FF14.
Ivalice isnt actually the past, but at the same time it is.
But a near identical Ivalice, that isnt the same Ivalice, despite having some identical features.
This way, anything FF14 does, doesnt ruin any plans SE has, for what they plan to do with Ivalice outside of FF14, and any plans SE has for ivalice, cant change FF14.

But Return to Ivalice was created by Yasumi Matsuno, creator of Ivalice. What now?For example, (warning, I might be misremembering which titles these were, but i think these were the right titles.)
