Its just kids and their FC dramas. Only good for laughing material and cringe.I personally wouldn't call what happened to me harassment... but I've seen it happen to others... and the fact that it was so "in my face" even as a male got me wondering... the fact that nobody even talks about it beyond "it's just a game" is baffling... people throw a fit when it comes to Asahi treating yotsutsu like a piece of meat yet are willing to shrug it off when it's real people involved... I'm sure it would be funny if this were to happen to your mothers/sisters/gfs/wives/daughters... cuz it's just a game afterall...
That guy referenced in the article wasn't a community leader...not in the sense like he was a GM or one of the staff here. He just ran a fan-zine. There are no doubt similar people playing this game while playing a game of their own, in their heads.
Blacklist them. Report them to a GM. Take whatever steps you need to cut them out of your life.
"We want bunny suits for guys!" -- OK! ✅
"We want Ishgard housing!" -- OK! ✅
"We want Viera!" -- OK! ✅
"We want Cloud's motorcycle!" -- OK! ✅
"We want Blue Mage!"-- OK! ✅
"We want the ability to earn past Feast rewards!" - HAHA no that's sacred.
Looking over alot of these replies I guess this community isn't nearly as decent as I thought...
I've heard all 8 of recordings so far and they all just sounded like melodrama to me and one of the married women even willingly sent him a nude. On top of that, I have yet to see any evidence of him doing anything that are actually horrible so it's a bit hard for me to care about either sides.
Despite I also grew a thick skin (or basically using common sense) towards people that do not even know me I think your response is somewhat irritating.
Just because you live in a ghetto where bikes getting stolen everyday it does not make every single theft less worse.
Instead of going "spoiled snowflake" (what does that even have to do with that) you could've worded it differently, sounding like you're one of those spitting poison occassionally and think that's funny because "itz just da internetz".
It's not. And I hope the law for the cyberspace will be set higher soon.
Just in real life, I would not want to be called or shown disgusting, disturbing or annoying things every chat I enter a virtual public place.
No, we don't have a "get out of jail free card", and it's exasperating that every single issue that affects women inevitably ends up being swerved into a "but it happens to men too!!!" discussion. Yes, it does, but that doesn't make this problem any less of a problem, or less worthy of discussion.
Nor are women are "automatically" believed. Look at the media. Look at the Bill Cosby case. Look at the PC gamer article mentioned. Look at the rhetoric surrounding assault. Women have been frequently dismissed, scorned, even blamed for what has happened to them; called liars, manipulators, dramatic, bitter, jealous, said to be looking for drama, looking for money, accused of "leading men on", and "ruining reputations." It is far from a foregone conclusion that the woman is right, or even believed. That's what the very existence of #MeToo is all about. All the women who had been abused and harassed were effectively silenced because they were told no one would believe them or take them seriously, and their careers would be over. #MeToo is about finally letting these women speak out, about ending decades long corruption in the media industry and bringing to justice those who had got away with it for so long. It is not a women-only movement designed to cast poor, innocent men in a bad light - there have even been men who have added their own stories to it.
I don't have a problem with talking about men being on the receiving end of harassment, but what annoys me is that most of the time the men who bring it up don't actually have any intention or desire to do so. It's only ever used to detract from or silence the topic of female harassment.
There's - unfortunately - a lot of people in this game who are capable of being very charismatic but have ulterior motives, manipulating others for their gain. It's why I urge everybody to be very wary of popular players who are surrounded by those who give them nothing but praise.
Nobody is perfect. I've seen a lot of artists on Balmung, for instance, who abuse their popularity to set their followers on whoever disagrees with them on even the most minor of issues.
I've seen entire FC's crumble because one member gradually turned even close friends against each other with subtle nudges and deceptive words.
So anyone who tries to downplay such scenarios is at best naive and worst likely guilty of such behaviour themselves. It is not as simple as just 'blocking' or 'reporting' such individuals. They know how to play the 'game'. They do it well. They also tend to do most of the incriminating things outside of the game itself.
The stuff even cringier than i thought.I've heard all 8 of recordings so far and they all just sounded like melodrama to me and one of the married women even willingly sent him a nude. On top of that, I have yet to see any evidence of him doing anything that are actually horrible so it's a bit hard for me to care about either sides.
i am wearing a bikini and some rubber boots on my lalafell when i am fishing, and i noticed that people /pet me waay more often in that outfit compared to when i am wearing more clothes >.>
however, i never felt actually harassed. people stopped when i did an angry emote, nobody followed me or did more than the /pet emote...
Well put. Abuse and harassment goes far deeper than the name-calling, stalking and offensive messages that most people associate with those terms. More often than not, it's perpetrated by someone the victim knows and even trusts, gradually occurs over time and the warning signs do not immediately present themselves. As you said, the abusers are usually charming, manipulative and highly predatory, and they single out vulnerable people they sense they can control. The victim is usually in too deep before they're even aware of what's happening.
Speaking from experience, it's not until you're away from it that you look back and realise what was actually going on.
