Yesterday, while leveling AST in Doma Castle. I was asking, why he is using Cover ("Deckung" in German) that much. He actually used it as his standard cd for bigger pulls (instead of sentinel or other cooldowns). Well, that was his reaction:

That sounds like someone whose used to other MMO's where healing is a near constant thing and is unwilling to switch their mentality even if it means just backing off an excess heal or two... Which frankly is only going to bite them later, especially once they get to the harder dungeons. Not even remotely going into the healer DPS debate, but chewing through your mana is never a good thing and there won't always be a magic DPS there to mana shift for you. Especially as AST which has perhaps the worst MP regen of the three healers right now. I'm so sorry you had to deal with that.

They were entirely new to healing in FFXIV it seemed (they had two DPS jobs partially levelled), but I really do hope for both their sake, and the sake of anyone else they play with, they learn how both their job and role work. I know my tanking isn't great, but I did try to help them. For future reference, if I encounter other healers like this, how would you advise them?

There really aren't many MMOs that require that in my experience.

There are MMOs where you can get away with it...

In such MMOs, typically it's not usually that they're spamming heals because they need to... but more because it's all they have... You have to do "something" to avoid 'Boss zzz' - faceplanting on your keyboard from boredom...
Imagine if the DPS spells of a healer here had all their DPS cut to 1/5 to 1/4 of current numbers... would many healers still bother using them? In most MMOs you don't use your 'healing job' when solo or 'questing'; so they lack the tools to even do enough damage for that kind of content...
At the same time in most MMOs, tanks typically have better mitigation than here, and only do about half the DPS of similarly geared DPSers... because once again... the 'tank job' is not meant for solo or questing in most MMOs.
- The only Job here that is like most MMOs is SCH/SMN - a two specialization job where, if SE wanted, they could essentially remove ALL the damage spells from SCH and players of it would not suffer at all in solo / questing play... (other than suffer 'fun wise'...)


In addition... in FFXIV, it is absurdly common to run into tanks that are way underprepared and take too much incoming damage. I find I -NEED- to spam heals here more than in any other MMO...
- so when I get a tank that is actually properly geared and uses proper mitigation cooldowns... it is more a surprise than an expected thing... and I can open up with the DPS...

The difference here is that in those rare moments when I don't need to spam heals... the toolkit for doing other things is quite potent.

I could easily imagine someone else healing in this game and getting 'trained' to spam heals because so many tanks won't live even if you're doing that... And a lot of people are not so good at adjusting when faced with 'something different'...

For future reference, if I encounter other healers like this, how would you advise them?

The problem with giving a player doing this advice is... they're doing it because they're not able to really take advice.

Look at it this way, and this ALSO applies to all the tanks I see in this game that suffer too much damage...

You have a full list of abilities... and you have a situation in the game. You play... and you can see that you are constantly running out of mana, getting massive overheals, and not using 90% of your actions...
- That alone should tell you you're doing something wrong.

Likewise... you go tank something, you keep getting knocked to 20% or killed in the first few hits... you're only using a small number of your actions... and maybe you're even struggling to keep aggro...
- Again... all the advice you need has just presented itself to you...

If you're not open to even examining your own abilities list, and if it's patently obvious that something is massively wrong... if you're instinct is to declare 'bad game design' or 'that other person isn't doing their job right'...
- then you are kind of immune to accepting advice in the first place...


There's a difference between 'rotation off, not using the abilities with good timing, missing a few abilities, undergeared, etc...

and

doing it completely wrong, overrelying on too small of a set of abilities, and not seeing a basic fundamental aspect of a class/job.

You can advise people who are 'trying' but getting it wrong in even some big ways... but if they're locked into narrow focus and repeating it even in the face of failure... that's a closed mind.


I'm reminded of another MMO where I was raid tanking... we kept seeing our tanks get one-shot on a 'tank buster mechanic that should take 2 hits to kill a tank (and one-shot anyone else). It was a regular theme - at some point every night, we'd lose a tank to that mechanic. Often several times a night.
My co-tank's reaction: My class is bugged, this boss mechanic is bugged.
My reaction: I must be doing something wrong, but I can't see it... I have no idea what's going on... but I am pretty sure we're missing something vital here...

I eventually asked a healer... and he quietly whispered me "yeah... you're missing the XYZ, not hitting your ABC mitigation right, and standing just outside where you need to be", and I also paid very careful attention to the timing of our tank swaps and noticed... "we're missing some of these because of that XYZ and our positioning making us think we didn't already have one hit on us..."

The other tank never did stop believing that the mechanic was bugged... he just started thinking they must have partially patched it... I quietly adjusted my strat to try and correct my error and cover his.

When something is going wrong... some people will NEVER look to the possibility that they're doing it wrong... giving them advice can be pointless.

Being from Gilgamesh, and maining AST, that is painful to read. They must have either been preoccupied with something IRL, being lazy, or just flat out not caring at all, considering they should have by now a grasp on how to play this game. Did they have any other healers to 70? If so then they just didn't give a crap from the sound of it.

So .. I know I haven't made alot of friends on here. But I did wanted to plot my experiences with sav on here. And ask for a bit of advice if I can. As I mentioned abit ago I started raiding a little under a month ago. - I know I'm late-. But lately I HOPE I'm getting better, my group says I am but it doesn't feel like it. I'm now ilvl 356 and I got my 360 weapon from the tomestone in the painting fight sav. I want to be the top in my group, but I'm always 3rd. You can look up my logs if you look for sony playstation on balmung. - please don't yell at me for those.- I know they aren't the best ever, hell they might be low as far as I'm thinking. but other than training on the dummy everyday and testing out my rotation in stone sky sea. I'm at a lost. Is it a gear thing where I'm just not going to get the high points? hmm let me get the numbers... my highest is 4,828.5. Hmm I feel like I need alot more training T.T Is there anything I could do to help me get better numbers?

Not really a horror story, just a strange one. I've been running into a lot of randoms in Roulette wearing the pig mask, or in a full moogle costume.

Then there was another one (Halatali, I believe), where it was full of people with the surname "Uchiha", yet only one of them was actually a Ninja.

I don't know enough about MNK to give deep insight, but I grabbed a random log of a like a rank 300 MNK and compared it to yours.

Notable issues: CPM is really low 34.9 (adjusted for fight length) compared to their 39.9. They're pushing buttons 15% more often than you.

On top of that, you only had 90% GL uptime. They had 99.9%. You had 79% Twin Snakes they had 97%, Crit up was 100% for them, was 93% for you.

I wish I could offer more insight, but I am the furthest thing from a MNK expert. You definitely are having uptime issues and button pressing issues though.
