New technologies lead to hard game to make. Think about sprite based game and resolution : the higher the resolution, the more you need detail on your sprites. The same way, you often need more work to get a game the same scale on a newer engine. This is why there no world map on FF X, interconnected zones work better at that level of detail.

This is why you just can't make a FF XI map in FF XIV anyway. The fact that FF XIV have more recent engine doesn't help, especially since FF XIV was made in difficult conditions.
