Perhaps I can answer both of you with my next unpopular opinion so you can understand my psychology a little better, because you're coming from a very different angle to me ...
I went through a small period of running Titan Ex DF repeatedly.
'For the drops?' I hear you ask. No.
'To help people?' Well, kind of, but that wasn't the real reason.
So what? Well, it was because Titan Ex at that time was a difficult fight for newbies to get right. Because it was DF, you got a bunch of total, unpredictable randomers. People frequently messed up. People fell off, were blown up by boulders, or otherwise completely messed up, and I love that. I can't even tell you how much I adoreit when it goes wrong.
And here's why I'm telling you a healer has a true abundance of pure spontaneity not available to other roles:
Someone failed a mechanic and died!
Should I raise them now? No, but wait, Swiftcast is down.
Is the other healer casting? No. Maybe their swift isn't up!?
Any other raisers in the PT? No.
Shall I hard cast? No, wait, big AoE incoming I've gotta heal through ...
RIGHT, done. Can I raise yet? Five seconds on swift, tick-tock, tick-tock ...
Is there an incoming mechanic? No ...
I'll wait for swift, and pop off a few Malef- CRUD! Tank forgot to shield that tank buster! Gotta heal him with Essential Dig- oh fiddlesticks, I used that already, hard cast Benefic 2 ...
Right done, swift ready, gonna cast that ... BAAM! Done. Gotta keep an eye on them when they get up so I can top off and protect ...
Throw in a bit of DPS while we're waiting ... Crap, other healer's dead. Gotta hardcast the raise now but make sure PT is topped off for next mechanic ... Benefic 2 on the one I just raised and Aspected Helios cos that's about to drop, right, hardcast raise ... NO WAIT ORANGE CIRCLE AOE!!!
No, but I've GOTTA get them up for the next set of mechs cos I can't solo heal that ... I've gotta stay here, take the blow, I think I can survive it ...
Raise complete! I'm at 15% HP. Essential Dignity is down, swift down, lightspeed still down, gotta hardcast benefic but FFFFUUUU mob's casting the AOE! I've gotta cast Benefic 2 and pray to all the deities I'll finish the cast before the mob does so I can ...
PHEW! I'M ALIVE I'M ALIVE I'M ALIVE!
Mob dies.
You can't tell me than a rotation of Ability > Ability > Ability > Ability holds a single candle to being a healer when the pt's in dire straits. In the worst of times, the healers are the only thing between everyone and inevitable death. We make split second decisions that will make or break your cosy little run.
So after all of that, here's my next unpopular opinion:
When people mess up, I love it to death (with the exception of clear parties of course, because the success of a clear is satisfaction enough). If Rabanastre isn't on the verge of at least one wipe I'm bored to tears. If saltmeisters all got their way and we were all perfect, this game would be as dull as hell for me and I'd quite happily quit.
