I think there's some confusion over the timings in question:

Houses are demolished after 45 days of not being entered (when the demolition timer is running anyway...)

Those objects are then held by the caretaker NPC for a further 35 days.

As to why there is a limited time to retrieve items, officially they've never said why, but personally I believe it's because housing was supposed to be a gil sink and this way they take money and items worth money out of the system.

The official post on reclamation is here: https://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/lodes...3e7ccabefa9954

To the OP though, sorry that you lost your house

More housing is coming just after 4.2 releases, although initially it's only for companies and we're unsure at this point when personal houses can be bought, but what I'm trying to say is you possibly have a little time to get some money together to be ready to get another one.

The demolition timer is far too short in my opinion. I have been playing mmos for a very long time and I can tell you it's far from unusual for people to be unable to log on for about a month. The timer should be 90 days instead, that would be far more reasonable.

Gotta ask OP though, why didn't you just get your wife to log in on your account? I know this is technically account sharing and it's against the terms of use, but in this case your account wouldn't have been at risk at all and SE would be none the wiser. I know several people who got friends and family members to log in on their accounts to reset the timer.

Edit: reread OP's post again, perhaps financial issues prevented someone else logging in for him. Sucks

what money did you lose? If your property gets demo'd, do you get the money you paid for the property if you come back in 30 days?

You get back 80% of the purchase price of the property and all your furniture, if you pick them up from the NPC within 35 days of the demolition. After that time it's all lost.

It's absolutely not the same. You are comparing apples and oranges. Gear, minions, etc. are all unlimited resources in this game and farming up a full set of the latest gear and then not logging in for more than a month doesn't affect anyone but you. Sitting on a house and not using it because you don't even log in for more than a month is locking another person, or even entire FC, completely out of housing just to hold your place for whenever you might come back.

If anyone has a right to be upset about the demo timer, it's people like me. I bought a house loooooong before auto-demo was a thing and lost it because they decided to implement the timer while I was taking an extended break due to getting married and moving to an entirely different continent. It sucks, plain and simple, but even then, I recognize the demo timer as a necessary evil. For as long as the housing system remains broken af, I'll support auto-demos so that houses will go to active players.

Not all. There's plenty of time-gated preorder minions that you can't get anymore, legacy mounts you can't get anymore, feast mounts that only 30/100 people in each data center got, feast gear that only 100 people in the data center got. There's plenty of limited minions/mounts/gear in this game that I'm sure someone 'more active' than the owner would want.

You're missing the entire point. You obtaining limited time minions, mounts, etc. does NOT prevent another person from obtaining them as well. You sitting on a house you aren't using because you aren't subbed prevents one or more people from accessing housing. Feast gear and mounts are prestige awards that go to people who do the most competitive pvp that this game has to offer, unless you think that houses should be doled out based on a hunger games type system. If SE wants them to be prestige awards, fine, make them require some prestigious accomplishment to obtain. As of right now they go to whoever manages to scrape together the minimum amount of gil and happens to be in the right place at the right time to buy one.

The only reason housing is a limited resource is because SE was stubborn about having that community feel and created a crappy ward system that allowed such limitation to occur. If they had put in instanced housing (at least for personal houses), none of this would have been an issue.

If SE had done the same for mounts, made it so only a limited players could get them and they'd lose them over time in order for other people to get them, wouldn't you also want to stand up for that and say that it's just plain stupid that a person who needs to go away for a bit (because of medical/financial reasons or whatever) is suddenly punished for it? It's absolutely horrible that people excuse that and that SE thinks it's fair.

Besides, even if the demo timer is 30 or 45 days, why does the recovery timer (for getting gil/items) from the demo need to be so short? They could still keep their short demo timer and have a long recovery timer. There is no one being locked out of anything from having a longer recovery timer.

I was in the hospital for 20 days while my wife was between jobs so my insurance was gone. We're getting back on our feet now, but it was a slow and painful (literally for me) process. FFXIV was not my concern, but I didn't assume I would be punished for real life health issues, and if that's the case, I'd just assume not give SE anymore of my money.

    Thanks.

This whole idea of entering the house has always been a bad one in my opinion. A paying sub is all that should be necessary. Sorry about your health issues and sorry you lost all your things.
