I was under the impression you can own an FC house and personal house per world. So a single character can be an FC leader and have a personal house, but your alts can't own anything else.

From the Letter from the Producer update thread: "If you have two characters (character A and B) on one World, and A is enlisted in a free company which owns an estate, then B will not be able to purchase a free company estate."
I interpret this to mean you cannot purchase an FC estate even if you are not already an owner of an FC house. Just being member of a house owning FC excludes you from buying on any alt you may have.
