The non-verbal queues tend to make a bit more sense when you look at it from the original Japanese compared to the English localization, in my opinion. This is just based on the reactions of my character in the level 50 cutscenes after familiarizing myself with the original Japanese...

    Example 1:
In the English, your Darkside says to you: “I seem to have underestimated myself, but no matter. They have borne witness to the darkness within us. To what lies beneath the mask.”

In the Japanese, your Darkside says to you: “So this is the end. You gave me a voice, and now you take it away. Is this not...terribly ironic...? That strength of yours...it makes you a hero...but it gives you so much pain. And one day...it might even claim your life...”

I feel like the sad expression on our character’s face, while it fits the English, fits the Japanese dialogue much more.

    Example 2:
In the English, your Darkside says to you, “So this is your answer. Listen to my voice. Listen to our heartbeat. Listen...”

In the Japanese, your Darkside says to you, “I am...the part of you that could not be a hero. But I wonder...if I could be one with you once more.”

I feel like the nod and the smile our character does makes a lot more sense in the Japanese context, especially when our Darkside smiles back, and reaches their hand out to commune with our character again.

Source of the translation (because I’m not skilled enough in Japanese/way too lazy to translate myself): awesome post that is awesome.

While I’ve only briefly translated bits and pieces of the 70 quest myself...

In the Japanese version, Sid actually does acknowledge Fray as Fray in the level 70 quest (he says: “It can’t be...Fray? What is this?”). However, Fray acknowledges himself as the same “vision” as his other incarnations (I’m assuming this is referring to how he was during the 30~50 quest chain), which was born from “you” (the player). So, technically, Fray manifests as Fray, but acknowledges himself as an extension of your character (unless I am misunderstanding/losing something in translation).

The lore behind soul stones seems to imply that they carry the deeds and memories of their past owners, so I think this could possibly tie in to why it was “Fray” that manifested during the level 70 quest instead of your “Darkside” (though that would have been incredibly epic to fight alongside your Darkside as opposed to against it, not even going to lie there).

Myste is viewed as your own personal remorse/regret over failing to save some of those who are close to you—he has Haurchefant’s hair color/eyes, and Ysayle’s hair, if you want some telltale signs as to why people think this. I actually really like the contrast between the 30~50 and 60~70 quest chains: one is exploring the side of you that harbors anger and resentment, and a desire to return to normalcy; the other exploring the side of you the harbors regret and remorse at failing to save the lives of those you love. I think that’s what “Fray” and “Myste” represent in the level 70 quest, and when they both vanish into the abyss, it’s them becoming one with you once more and your character returning to a state of acceptance/peace.

That’s just my thoughts on it, anyways. I enjoy the DRK quests because both versions (Japanese and English) actually make you stop and think about the deeper aspects of the story. Very psychological; I love it! :3

I honestly can’t wait to see if that translator translates the SB DRK quests. I am super excited to read them! :3
