Actually, that's not quite right. you can have your weapon drawn and your enemy targeted without initiating auto attack. It's only when you get the "three diamonds" shape that auto attack is initiated. As such, you can be attacking, then push ESC once to cease attacking without untargeting, then push Enter later to resume attacks. Though, to be fair, you can't even buff or anything without the circle turning into the diamonds, but buffs aren't consumed by auto attack, so the only thing you should have to worry about is bind/sleep being broken.
