So many masochists in this thread, too many people getting nostalgic and forgetting how terrible leveling was before Aht Urghan expansion. I never felt accomplished in that game, it was more like "god finally I'm done with this bs, now for the boring merit parties ugh" or "finally after months I got this 1 drop, so ridiculous".

Congratulations for this post you made me remember all that good stuff from FFXI, i really liked how you needed to advance to different areas in order to level up in that game, made you feel like you were achieving something, in this game however and different times that we are now grinding is not so important, everyone wants to be doing endgame almost from day one, im sure that nobody wants the grinding to come back except for a few of us who enjoyed that much but is not that bad, maybe all those concepts could be reused but in a different way with endgame material, like doing chains of quest that takes you to a lot of different areas not accesible at first or events that change the area around you like a few areas from WoW that nobody could see the changes except for the ones that completed the quests.

Maybe that way we will have that growing feeling again and be more attached to the game than we are now.

Leveling didn't become terrible until ToAU when all strategy and planning was thrown out the window in exchange for rapid fire spam parties. Clearly, the MMORPG genre is not for you.

ToAU was the first step in destroying the progression of that game. Sure the endgame content was great and who didn't love the lolSkillup of Besieged. It ruined the BLM job and led way to the absurdity of 40+ worthless missions and the introduction of WoWesque Assault instanced repeat garbage. The endgame content was the best in the series.

I can't say I am or was a masochist. Your experience is just that... yours. I didn't find leveling to be a painful experience by any means. But then again, I was one of the very few people smart enough to do something other than stand around waiting for a party when I wasn't in one.

Much agreed, not only that but 1/2 their team won't be working on 3.0 as they are with 2.0 now. With a good structure in place and a fully focused team, development will be much more rapid. I can't wait, where did I put that time machine.....

It's only a journey the first few times you do it. After that it turns into a grind. It's the same way with all of these types of MMO's. I can't say leveling my third 75 was exhilarating and compelling. I can't say getting my third set of AF gear felt as good as it did when I finally got my first set. Sky wasn't as awe inspiring after being there nearly every day. The trip through Zi'tah lost it's sense of serenity. The 10th time you kill Dynamis Lord isn't quite as sweet as the first time. It all becomes routine. Like I said though, this is not a problem specific to XI. Every linear themepark MMO has this problem. The only difference with XI was that it took a lot longer to get to the point when things felt routine.

The journey doesn't have to be a grind.

The lack of different areas and milestones has been brought up in that famous One zone thread. SE is aware of this and is changing the maps, and they seem to want to keep the grind to 50 as convenient as possible.

Their challenge is to continue to set up different activities to "hide" the grind to 50 and make it fun and diversified. The journey would still be there. I have nostalgia too when I think of FFXI, but when you really think about it, there are so many nights lost trying to find a party or dealing with incompetent players ... I think a good share of the current playerbase have busy lives and cannot afford unproductive playtime or statics.

We'll know in a few months if they succeed.
