Most people play with standard pentiums or AMD a5 APU's, lol. The minority has gaming rigs like that, and I am included int he minority. I have a 4770k and a GTX980ti, hence me never having issues when lots of people are on screen or during Odin and Ixion. You won't crash, simple.
Your Client will display only a set number of Players. Most likely 40 (Heck you can even set it in the Settings) so you shouldnt crash at all.
It is under "Others --> Character/Objects"
Crashing and Disconnecting are two different subjects, one throws you completely out of the Game, the other simply puts you back to the Menu Screen.
Weak PC Systems, ya ... not in 2017...
A i7-4790K CPU + 1060 GTX + 8 GB / 16 GB RAM should be Overkill for this ... simply built Game.
unless you run at 4K with Ultra-Realistic Settings on Reshade... thats another Story tho, heh..
D/C's generally come from server/isp/routing(including router hardware) issues
While poor PC hardware can contribute (not the main cause) to lag/d/c issues, given the equipment nowadays for PC's and the low bar FFXIV has for hardware, I wouldn't think that would be an issue.
Back on topic.
Don't expect it to be unlocked....EVER. Hence the transfer incentives.

That's just it though, many people play on below minimum spec laptops or non gaming desktops that run between 15-20 fps in non populated zones.D/C's generally come from server/isp/routing(including router hardware) issues

My husband plays on a below spec PC and we do not have the issues you describe. Also a PS3 which I'm pretty sure is even worse than the worst laptop/desktop combo. That was a miserable time. But we didn't D/C. Sure we may have ate AOE pizza for days....![]()

Player "machines" do not handle any part of that except drawing assets where the servers have told them to. That explains FPS bog and nothing more. Under certain FPS drops, your client may experience a fatal error during certain preexistent compatibility issues. But it will never disconnect you.
Your "network" does, however, though to a smaller degree than the server itself. The reason 140 players can be present in a given zone without issue, yet face disconnection if even just 40 players are attempting Ixion at the same time, is that you aren't interacting with all 40 players. Turn on all battle log message: what do you see? Chances are it's significantly less than when 40 people are standing around Raubahn, Extreme mode or simple, early Normal-mode rush. You still need to see what gear they're wearing, what their names are, what their FCs are, what their jobs are, but at least it's not yet telling you their adjusted HP values with every hit, every combat action they take or receive, etc.
But it's the servers that are dropping you when it's not longer able to receive packets from you. You can stop being able to convey or receive information indefinitely and the network will not necessarily drop you any more than it would a webpage on a browser with no automatic time-out. The server is what considers you unresponsive and removes you accordingly to reduce load.

I have a new Ryzen build with way overkill to handle this game i 90K'd alot during early SB on Ixion fate. Now it never happens so im theory something was adjusted on servers/SE end as i'm running with same hardware.
Or the majority of us simply just don't go and kill Ixion any more. Once you have enough horns to trade in for the item(s) you want, there really is no incentive to go back and kill him again.
Well, that's why I still do it cause i got my mount pre nerf and going back casually whenver i know its up to collect rest of the newly added items.
I disagree, this is a great game and very popular with over ten million gamer's. I believe lots a jealous WoW nerds are messing with us. Lets just wait for our beloved game owners to fix this problem.
I've said it before in a similar thread, and I'll say it again here. There are some quality of life stuff to help players out in the event they are on different servers such as the following:
- Cross-Server party finder (godsend since 3.5 IMO)
- Cross-Server Friend Lists (long time coming)
- Cross-Server Linkshells
- Discord
- Teamspeak
- Mumble
- Lodestone blogs
- Those discord chats that apply to the entire data center
I mean, servers such as Leviathan, Excalibur, Hyperion, Sargatanas, and Behemoth have decent populations, raiding, and social scenes, but not on the level of Balmung or Gilgamesh. I wonder why?
Other servers need opportunities to flourish as communities too.
