It's FF14. The community IS casual.
Also I love how people are saying "If you had HD textures, less people will be able to run it." Like it's only going to have one setting. You know you can toggle options, right?
14 runs on an extremely tight budget. Anything excess is either used by SE to fund their other projects, or is reinvested into the cash shop to fund other projects. It took several years of Yoshida badgering his superiors to get access to the money needed for the server relocation.
Which is what i said. We're paying our sub not for the game development but other SE's project. I mentioned SE in my post, not the FFXIV team. This game dies because not all of our money is invested in it, only a small part, which I find kinda scandalous.14 runs on an extremely tight budget. Optional hi-res texture pack for PC would be nice to have.
Ummm that's not the way it works with textures. It was the poly-count of a lot of things and an engine that was simply NOT built for an open world design that was killing it.It's pretty darn obvious on some armors. Glacial Coat is nothing but pixels and low res even. And the stones in limsa.
Thing is, the entire game engine was rebuild from scratch to work with low-res textures. The game looks terrible compared to 1.0, but there's nothing they can do to change it. They'd have to rewrite it again.
And as I said, that would require double the work. You can say all you want that the textures can be made high and then lowered in resolution automatically, but not only that takes a lot of time when you have so many textures, but the automatic resolution lowering systems are erratic. The output needs to be modified by humans anyway...or you get textures with the same resolution as now that are even worse than that.
Besides, I've seen games that are so poorly optimized, that their "optional" graphical features, even if turned off, were still draining resources. So yes...Sorry, but I don't think that it's a good idea to actually upgrade MMO games graphics by any significant amount, even with "optional" features, unless it's done on the clients side through taking advantage of new hardware or drivers/frameworks features.
Still doesn't work that way. Having an option for high resolution textures doesn't magically make the game less optimised for everyone else. Also, being an apologist just encourages devs to be lazy..

It's easy to implement and fast.
The only problem is the weight. Hi-res textures could double or even triple the space, and SE would have to send more data if somebody wanted to download the hi-res textures, wich means additional cost.
I would gladly pay for hi-res textures, this game NEEDS it (and better anti-aliasing options).

That is very true. I'd be happy to pay for it as an additional optional download. It's easy to implement and fast.
