I would much rather them put this time and effort into the highly demanded glamour log. Because you know what's not fun? That I can't equip multiple jobs of the same role equally while also giving them each their own look.

I will say this though, the argument that we should be able to glam this and that because of tankinis and swine mages isn't going to fly, and I would be happy we can even do that. The devs have made it crystal clear that it's OK for you to look ridiculous, but it's not OK for one role to take on the appearance of another.

Even if taking on the appearance of another role requires nothing more than dyeing yourself a different color - which happens quite frequently with shared gear set models and was a staple for casters/healers for a long time.
Even if one expansion later, they take the appearance of another role (MNK/NIN) and give it to everyone (Holy Rainbow Shirt) or just selectively to some (Healers/Casters - Ghost Bargue Dragoon/NIN gear).
Even if it's already perfectly possible in every direction (Tank to healer, healer to tank, melee DPS to caster, caster to ranged, whatever) by mix&matching gear, it's just somewhat restricted.

I'm afraid their actions speak so loud I can't hear a word they're saying. A crystal clear stance looks different - That looks more like an arbitrary mess of hypocrisy.

A system similar to what XI does with style lock would be cool

Simply put, if you have a job who can equip the gear, you can "glamour" it to ANYTHING regardless of class or level. If I had a level 1 WAR and 99 THF, but I have all the THF JSE sets, I can "glamour" those JSE sets onto my level 1 WAR, even if I'm butt naked. The only restriction was weapons for animation purposes, but in 14, that wouldn't make any difference

I agree with you, OP. The glamour restrictions are ridiculous.

I still don't understand how they got this right IN THEIR OLDER MMO but can't seem to figure out one end of a horse from the other in their supposedly more modern one.

It's a fantastic system. And better yet, it makes you never need the BlinkMeNot addon since you can't blink with lockstyle active

You have to realise that FFXI didn't figure out how to add the /lockstyle command (the name of its glamour system) until roughly 12 years after its very first release (PS2 version for JP, on the 16th of May, 2002).

Flawed argument. Different market back then. Technologies and systems were still being developed in the MMO world. That excuse doesn't fly now; what's more, this isn't Square Enix's first MMO. It's like saying every new car company that crops up has to go through a Model T era before they can be expected to build modern cars.

That's not hypocrisy. That is what is called compromise. Despite their strict restrictions, they've released the sets you've mentioned. They've also released level 1 heavy armor sets (Ranger gear), and robes (Scholasticate coat) just to name a couple, anyone can glamour. Just go to your nearest MB, and look at the TONS of level 1 glams you have to choose from. Yet the reactions aren't "thank you SE!" are they? No, the reactions are "Lift the gender restrictions", "Lift the race restrictions", "Lift the role restrictions!"... "Lift the JOB restrictions!"

The playerbase wants free reign, and they are saying no. That is what is crystal clear. They may not say that directly, and dilly dally around the possible and not possible, but make no mistake, that is what they are saying. Perhaps to get rid of the air of hypocrisy you speak of, they can very well take away all of the glamour items you and I mentioned here. How about that?

Not true. Style Lock is deactivated if you change Jobs in FFXI (meaning you lose whatever appearance you have glamoured), thus preventing you from adding AF to the wrong Job just like it is here in FFXIV (if it actually allowed it, then that is something that was only possible for a short time and was changed, as shown here:

This category has the same effect as the /lockstyle commands. Selecting “Static” will lock the character’s appearance.

The conditions for a character’s appearance to be automatically unlocked have been changed to the following
    When changing jobs.
Although I do agree FFXI's Style Lock is a better system than FFXIV's Glamour Prisms, it's not perfect, and has it's own set of issues. And as has been mentioned, it was only implemented into the game anyway because FFXIV had already implemented it, FFXI is merely playing catch-up. Either way, although the current system can be improved, it's better than no glamour at all. People should really be grateful for what we have instead of constantly demanding "MOAR!" First World Problems I guess...

SE is not a charity and we have no obligation to simply be "grateful" for whatever crumbs they deign to let fall.
