WoW has a system where you can request an item restoration every 30 days. I think something similar would be sufficient in XIV. A buyback system would also be nice. Taking another page from WoW, it could work the same. When you purchase an item, you have a certain amount of time before you can turn it back in for the amount of currency you spent. But it could become void once materia is slotted or something.
