It doesn't actually. You just need a bit of tech savviness and to know where to get the right programs and such.

In times of Cloud Services, also DDoS Botnets are up for rent.

Worst example: Even a rich kid with daddys platincard could pull that off if it happens to him he had no time on EA day and want to screw everyone elses day as well..

DDOS attack is usually done by what's called zombie computers. Basically, millions of computer are already infected with malware and such right now that didn't do anything noticeable, and when the someone want to use them they just signal those thousands of millions of infected computers to send data to the place they want to DDOS, without the owners even realizing. That's why DDOS is hard to defend against, because it's so cheap and simple to do.

Not necessarily..

The hacker(s) can use hacked computers to send a signal to the server, in example, your personal computer that had a certain virus embedded in it to send the signal without you even knowing. They can also just use VPS or a Dedicated system rented from some service provider with a program installed in said systems to send out multiple connection signals. Then there is also LAN cafes.. Too many ways to get the resource the hacker needs really.

It doesn't mean the hacker them self has to own many systems in their own home to issue out the attack, most of the time the attack is made online, masking their Proxy to look like the attack came form China or some other place. You can even pay a website that deals with this kind of service to send out attacks to a server. Anyone really can send an attack if you know what you are doing. It's not as hard as you think it may be. I too once thought 1 system meant 1 connection signal, till i had a friend told me on how these attacks work and how they happen.

Alright. Then why not block the ip addresses of the computers that the attack is coming from? I'm assuming that if you play ffxiv, then you're sending data to their servers anyway so it wouldn't really matter if actual ffxiv players were infected.
