In the least offensive way possible, I'm calling shenanigans. This game was made to be a complete departure from FFXI. When CONs and THMs were invented, they weren't meant to look or act like BLM or WHM; they've only been shaped in that direction lately. They were supposed to be entirely new standards.

There's nothing "BLM" or "WHM" about the way they dress. The conjurers wear robes, the thaumaturge wear cowls. In every color. Period.

I invite you to look at the members of the patrons lists Here and Here for a clear depiction. They all wear all colors. So, unless you're insinuating that Black Mages have always worn robes and coifs and White Mages have always worn one-piece cowls, you're way, way off.

The fact that most of the CONs are wearing weapons made of leaves and trees and THMs are made out of metal and bone isn't helping your argument very much either.

What you're right about is that they were originally meant to deal with the Elements (CON) and the polarities of those elements (THM) - but neither of those relate to black or white in any way whatsoever aside from the fact that their ability lists are clearly a binary of "Celestial Brilliance" and "Damnation".

    Again... COME ONNNN.

I take it you've never played any FF previous to FFXI, where the majority had the same outfits for BLM and WHM.

There's not a FF I haven't played; but I can see the likeness, I just can't take any MEANING away from it in 2011 knowing that 2.0 is coming. I won't deny that the promo art makes it seem very much like your case is strong, but based on that I could say PGL was clearly going Ninja someday.

In the days that these images were relevant, THM was the healer supreme; non stop AoE auto-regen curespam. Those were the DAYS. CON was no healer; tiny AoE, couldn't land itself, no regen... Times have changed. Not only was THM turned into a DD, but CON was turned into a main healer - all of this coming AFTER the job system was designed. Honestly, I think their decision is pretty clear.

It all depends on the changes 1.20 brings; If Yoshida retracts 1.18 in 1.20 and swaps them back, I concede. I'm not sure which is more likely. Thaumaturge even means Miracle Worker. It'd make sense to just swap their ability sets aside from their nuke types - but think of how many people THAT'D piss off. Or, they could just swap their nuke types... and leave CON with WHM and THM with BLM without much overall change to the game mechanic.

Yoshida-san said 1.20 would make it very clear who is going to be who. I simply think that it's more likely, whatever the 2010 production art looked like, to have THM be BLM. It'd be silly as hell if one of my quests on the Road to White Mage was PKing a member of my own guild.
