I'm not opposed to that at all! But remember that currencies like esoterics always go away at some point.

Oh and to answer your question, Esoterics are no longer available. The new tomes are Lore and Scripture.

So in the current patch past dungeon gear would cost you Lore as it's the lesser tomestone. However; most likely (as you stated), Lore will probably be phased out in 3.5, so in 3.5 the tomestone needed for past dungeon gear would then be Scripture. You use the past tomestone for past dungeon gear/old tomestone gear/crafting items.
