Or even Shoulder Tackle + Repelling Shot, but only in the forward/backward motion. The animations look entirely different. The video doesn't give me any "magic Dragoon" feelings at all, in fact it looks to me like it could offer some unique gameplay.
I'm excited.
Everyone has an opinion. As it stands right now, RDM looks like a soulless copy of BLM with a gimmick of occasionally swinging their sword for one attack before retreating. I agree that the animations look amazing, but the gameplay style it seems to have looks incredibly lacking in creativity. All I'm hoping for at this point is it at least has some support abilities.
All of this, of course, is not meant to demean the aesthetic of the job I adore, however it is my two cents that I personally find this job to be about as uninspired as could be.
At least it has a sweet vpose.
They showed a lot more than just three moves. There were at least 9 different moves used within the video, only two of which actually involved the RDM being in melee range. It's not a seamless blend of spell and steel like a classic true RDM is, it's a range heavy job with a one-off gimmick, as far as I can tell.
All I can realistically hope for now is it has some sort of worthwhile support skills.
Three cast spells, one buff, one charge in, one melee attack, one leap back, and one finisher. That's a lot more than 5No, there were not at least 9 different moves. At most 5. The video was literally 0:49 seconds long, more than half of which was battle stance and victory pose. So, effectively, you are basing your entire disappointment of the whole expansion on maybe 20 seconds of game play.

Hmm, now where have I seen a Staff/Sword mage class dealing damage and debuffs .. oh yes, Lord of The Rings Online's Lore-Master, with or without a pet.How do you think this style may play out for Red Mage? So far the short trailer showed some skills being most of Red Mage attacks are focused on the Sword Staff use for long range spells like Black mage and a sword skill being a "charge attack then jump back to position" skill like Dragoon's Jump Skill but with longer animation.
I know Red Mage is a staple FF job, I have one in FFXI, but this sounds kind of an unrequired extra DPS caster, to me.
at least until people start dying from the animation locks. Then you'll see the similarity with DRG :3
Honestly you sound quite ridiculous right now. You've lost all interest in the entire expansion because a minute long video that showcased like three whole moves weren't up to your dream of what RDM is supposed to be?Not particularly impressed with the magic dragoon gameplay choice, so far. My current biggest gripe is how the sword currently feels extremely disconnected from the way the job has classically had many viable options for both range and melee attacks, and to maximize you would need to strike a balance with both varieties of spells. As it is now, it doesn't feel like an RDM. At least, in my opinion. After being hyped for the job for so long, I've pretty much lost all interest in the expansion because of the way the job currently feels really halfhearted.
My first time seeing the video...
New expansion reveals so far have fulfilled two of my three most wanted features: underwater zone, melee/ranged hybrid job and a cool new race. Since the last one isn't happening I'll instead wish for a 2 second (or less) base GCD and keep my fingers crossed.
It's looking good and I'm excited.![]()

Sorry, but that's an extremely over-dramatic and negative way of thinking. They showed a lot more than just three moves. Well look at the bright side, the Staff is the Sword or if you prefer the Sword is the Staff.Hmm, now where have I seen a Staff/Sword mage class dealing damage and debuffs .. oh yes, Lord of The Rings Online's Lore-Master, with or without a pet.

Why have two separate weapons and ask "if sword mage or staff mage is better" when you can have both as one.![]()
Its going to be more street fighter / mortal kombat button smashing combo nonsense, X ABBB Y O XB to jump in, out, twirl around and pull flower petals out of your butt to unleash the killing blow.......was hoping red mages would actually be a mage, crazy right.
I always found RDM at its core to be incredibly bland, so the video at least made me interested in it for ff 14 lol. Im in the grp that woulda liked to see other classes besides rdm, but least the video makes it seem more unique than the usual "ok at all but not good at anything" shtick.
As for the video, seems like ill be Casting for its DPS phases and moving in and out of melee with Jump/repelling shot esque skills to melee for its refresh/chain build stages probably "ending" with chain spell" burst damage. Which I don't mind while I though rdm partying was boring in ff 11, the solo was nice cuz it had a borderline soothing flow to it going from "debuff"> attack > conserve etc.
