Except that Yoshida has explicitly stated himself that these items are meant to ease new players into the game and allow the to "catch up". So on top of the initial cost of the game, and a subscription, they are expected to buy these as well?

Why? When such things come free with expansions in other MMOs.

Don't the ARR MSQs have boosted experience when you own HW? Why not boost it further if you have HW and SB? And boost the HW MSQs cause you have SB. There are smarter ways to handle the "catching up" problem and Hall of the Novice could be expanded to help ease new players in better.
