I think the main reason why you can't dismount freely mid air are in case you fall down somewhere and your character gets stuck, if they land on there feet then yeah you can easily use the mount command again but it's times when you land in a arkward spot, so you may have landed but your character is still doing the fall animation.

Also maybe due to extra time adding these land zone areas could be used for something else.
