Then explain why Monk's whole shtick is attacking from every direction (but the front) when typically, iconically, traditionally, even in the 4.0 trailer, they face off in one on one duels from the front. If this is the dev's logic, it's flawed in my opinion.
Thea's a reason for that. Typically, iconically, traditionally, if someone uses a sword they are most often to challenge another to a duel face to face. It's a corner stone of the fantasy genre. As i have said before, there are very few depictions of a sword user attacking someone from behind. Though if have some of those depiction i welcome them, of particular interest would be samurai attacking people from behind.
Who exactly is this Sam person that people keep mentioning?
If you will notice, the first attack made by lady in red was in fact from behind. However, even i will admit that is splitting hairs. Monks (at least i have seen represented) are often depicted in sparing matches and fights to the death (media examples) face to face, that does not take away from the typical archetype of the wise and learned fist fighter.
As many aspects Far Eastern unarmed martial arts are centered around the flow of energy with in the body and the use of force to interrupt said energy, positioning to strike those pressure points. In this sense as the combat between unarmed (and armored) fighters is often one on one, face to face. In a group, may it be against a humanoid or say a dragon their tactics will understandably have to change.
Keep in mind however, should it come to pass that we get skill trees that would grant role changes within current jobs, I would love to see a MNK Tank build based on VIT and Fist of Stone. A combo intensive rotation to keep up a strong regen aura for example would be exciting to play.
A fun little anime amv i found (full of anime silliness, i actually enjoy that aspect) of what appears to be a Samurai in a multitude of fight scenes. I have yet to see the series myself but it seems like someone felt good old Guts needed a rival with a Katana.(lots of blood)
Character: Shimazu Toyohisa
Anime: Drifters
Hope you enjoy.

I've always thought Samurai should be a tank. The appearance alone of Samurai armor not only looks heavy, but visually you can see the protection it offers. At least that's what I observed at our museumThere is a good chance it will be DPS, though. I just hate the typical Samurai from over the top animes being overtly angry, bloodthirsty, reckless, and overpowered.
I agree mostly, however many of the "we need a sword DPS!" crowd favor over the top anime characters over accurate historical representations...I've always thought Samurai should be a tank. To them this is standard all Samurai should aspire to. What he did in his manga, anime, film... being more important and noteworthy than what Honda Tadakatsu, Saito Musashibo Benkei, and Tomoe Gozen were ever able to accomplish. Never mind what armor they would have actually used in battle.
In looking to historical depictions lets not forget, as much as I will celebrate the honor of Bushido and it's tenants (as i do Chivalry), swords do bloody work, the men that used swords are/ were violent men. Samurai engaged in head collecting as a time honored tradition and used it not only show their valor in battle but gain status. In short being blood thirsty was the way of life for all on the frontline.
the bottom picture is pretty much what a FINAL FANTASY SAMURAI AF gear looks like/ Traditional having Masamune Darw's family rest (halfmoon) on the helmet. Could be shoehorned as a dps in the veign of dragoon, or a tank competing wth WaR
Games that didnt follow the job system did have differing looks for characters you could call samurai,
the top pic looks like what everyone would just glamour it to anyway

Not this crap again. So everyone who would be fine with Samurai being a DPS is pissing over japanese culture. Seven hells. For the record I only care about the lore behind them (is it good?) and the way they behave in combat (is it fun?). It's pretty dumb that we don't have a sword DPS with a sword being the DPS icon, but we will probably get that with Red Mage anyway. I still prefer samurai not to be a tank, because I'm not particularly good at tanking, but I guess I'll have to practice more.
if they make it a tank, and not a drg-like dps wearing medium heavy armor, then its focus will probably be high damage, and probably debilitations outside of tank stance, it will probably feel like a dps or could even rival dps damage imo so i am ok with it if it has to be a tank. For sure the tanks resources with jobs are running low by now, at least from the classic ff jobsNot this crap again.
