All in all its pretty simple. Not as simple as direct slotting, but that wouldnt have worked within the jobs of the game.
They could have had 1 of each tier drop on all gathering types, why split it further ?

And yes it would have worked with the jobs of the game, for example a weaver has a 1 body piece and a 1 materia and slots it into the item, simple.

If players want it removed they talk to the Goblin, you lose the materia.

thats what they have. they essentially have 4 tiers of catalyst per gathering type. each teir corresponds to a level range of the item/materia.

they split it into each gathering type because if they didnt, then some gatherers wouldnt have any special contribution to the process. It ensures that each gatherer type is only competing with the same type of gatherer, instead of other gathering classes, and ensures that each gathering class retains some unique value.

and how you describe it is essentially how it works. weaver has materia item and catalyst and slots it. thats it. the goblin removes it. it sounds like you have no problems with the system, other than maybe each gathering class having unique items?

Well originally I said I would have preferred materia to be like gems in WoW, where any materia can go in any item not destroy the armor, not require extra catalyst and tbh not require a craft to install them.

Its one of those unique Japanese dev things where everything has to be done in the most time consuming and akward manner possible.

No point discussing this really in this tread anyways.

this gonna be a bit off topic, but i have to disagree, that would mean no meaning to have crafting class in the first place. Crafting classese would not have a meaning in the game if materia can be slotted by non crafters. It would be a totally different game already.
