The amount of time it takes isn't the issue - it's what you have to do in that time to get them. Maybe you love running the same faceroll 4man every day, but I'm personally not into it.
This. I can't bare to run Sohr Kai or Hull hard again. Infact i've pretty much stopped doing expert 'roulette' all together since it melts my brain.
You have to do 6 expert roulettes per week, if you're doing nothing else at all.
No 60 roulette, no trial roulette, no alexander, no savage, no PotD, no Diadem, no Aquapolis, no 24-man, no PvP, no ex primals, no hunts, no Gnath beast tribes.
Once that question comes up, you should be questioning why you're even playing the game anymore. A question that the devs should be hoping their players aren't asking themselves.I like how ppl always mention the grind for tomestones and how they dislike it, yet capping your weekly tomestones takes less than 3h per week, if you only do expert roulettes. But then the question comes up, what you need that gear for anyway, if you don't actually use it. And if you don't need it, capping stones or not becomes less of an issue.
the only time you actually grind for tomestones is when we get a new relic stage and you feel like having to finish it asap. but that's something everyone has to decide for him/herself
nothing wrong with taking 3 months off right? I mean the 3 month grind to get relic to 250 will probably take 2 days when 3.48 or 3.5 comes out, i mean the devs clearly think its ok to take a long break, cause everything will be handed to you as soon as you log back in, mostly. i guess.
I played FFXI since the USA release for some good 7-8 years, and I loved it.
But still, I don't want horizontal progression on FFXIV. I don't want to waste my time on placebo content such as grind gear and merits just to be better in some aspects.
My character grows here in FFXIV, but in a different way.
Achievements can be a way to measure it's growth, a proof that he's been there and he's done that. There's no need to change gear every single time you face a new foe; it's just placebo and meaningless.
Also, it's important that new players can catch you up fast. In FFXI it was a problem when a friend wanted to join and he had to spend 1-2 years before reaching you, and even then he was still far from you.

so is squall's outfit the last veteran reward?
And its not a bad thing that the game doesnt take the 11 route as stated above for the sake of the youngin's. But you do have subscribers like myself who have not missed a week of subscription since arr launched, it would be hella nice if you allowed midcore/hardcore players who dont just up and leave all the time, something worth their time, something a little more like everyones been asking, something meaningful
You even get seasonal events from year 1 in the cash shop, etc.

For me, the whole explanation is stupid...
Instead of that, the game has an ilvl and accuracy requirements, so those who don't have proper gear will need to build a whole new set...reaaaaaly different.Originally Posted by Yoshi-P
The same applies to how, having elements like ice and fire on your weapon and equipment is rather meaningless with our game design. If the game system has elements as a huge factor and let's say you face a boss who is weak against a certain element. Those who don't have the actions or weapons that are effective will need to start back from re-learning a certain move or go get that fire weapon that melts the boss.
Except that, in the current systemt you can just throw away your old gear. With horizontal progression, your "Fire weapon" may be useful several patches later.
Doing the Anima also takes a lot of time. And he admitted that Anima weapons are for people who can't overcome the difficulty of raids, so, he still expect his "less skilled" players to "have enough time".Originally Posted by Yoshi-P
If this continues to go on, there will be a moment where you lose focus and at one point you collapse. That sort of game system is highly addictive with fear and uplift alongside each other with the merit where it's harder to get bored because it forces you to continue spending most of your time. But, people nowadays don't have that time anymore.
Don't worry, you won't have to wait for ten years. Another tome-gathering-content-facerolling expansion will bore far enough players for the game to change direction or die.Originally Posted by Yoshi-P
This is just an imagination, but 10 years into the future we might shift into a team consisted of members who all truly love FFXIV and we might take our risk to release an expansion with that kind of character development involved in it, but at the moment it's impossible.
New players won't have a "hard time", they'll slowly learn while gathering levels. And as long as you can progress bit by bit, the amount of time you can put in the game doesn't matter...We don't need the system to be like old FFXI where you can only progress in content if you have 3 hours straight.Originally Posted by Yoshi-P
Even if we did change our policy, starting with new players having a hard time getting into the game, a majority of the current players will also be like "I was only able to keep playing because of the current system!"
Building item level is also an "endless" system...Originally Posted by Yoshi-P
Not having an endless element to build on your character is intentional and it's designed so you build up your item level instead.
"You will be bored by any system in the long run, so let's keep the one you're already bored with"...yep, totally makes sense.Originally Posted by Yoshi-P
Of course, we do understand you will get bored of refreshing your item level at one point, but no matter what sort of game desing you choose, you'll eventually get bored.
Or maybe they could, you know...build a different system for each expansion, so by the time you get bored, the system will change...

had to snip, but all your points cracked me up, totally how i see it at this point. Honestly, I feel like the JP community might be a bit at unease from this as well, but i dont nihongo so yeah not sure how they feel from this interview. For me, the whole explanation is stupid...

Good point, that was some odd damage control on Yoshi-P's behalf.
