lack of variety seems to be a running theme. To be fair, an elemental wheel really wouldn't work in how the game is designed now. It'd either end up as extreme button bloating with swapping of skills (which is kind of arbitrary) or imbalanced when it comes to selecting party composition. I feel the BLM we have works the way it is; for the most part the jobs are well designed save for a few exceptions, but that alone doesn't give much variety if the flow of gameplay in dungeons or non-boss fights remains largely the same.
Yeah but they can't retain the subs lol. It is just new people joining > old people leaving. Eventually the numbers will speak for themselves when they run out of new players >.< FFXI retained a steady, solid amount for a long time..People keep comparing 11 to 14 but despite what 11 may have done better, 14 has had up to triple the subscribers in far less time. So the reason they're reluctant to change anything is because it works to the casual player & gets them more money. Even now in this lull of the odd 3.0 patch it has almost double the subs 11 has ever had at one time. This is the sad truth. But some of the reason is probably bc FF has become more mainstream. I don't play mmos but I do play FF so they snagged me.
Yup..a lot would have to be reworked sadly..and that I highly doubt will happen :/To be fair, an elemental wheel really wouldn't work in how the game is designed now. Well, another reason is that MMOs are more mainstream now too and also more widely accepted. Look back at the time when XI was just coming out. If you even remotely mentioned you played MMOs then, there was a pretty high chance that no one around you played them and more often than not, quite a number of people would just laugh at you for it. Now these days, a much larger portion of the population plays MMOs and they're usually seen as something for everyone and not just "something nerds do thats uncool". I can pretty much guarantee that if it was still like that, XIV would have a far lower population.People keep comparing 11 to 14 but despite what 11 may have done better, 14 has had up to triple the subscribers in far less time. So the reason they're reluctant to change anything is because it works to the casual player & gets them more money. Also, going off various things, the population of XIV(about 500k-600kish) is about the same ish as what XI had at its peak, maybe 100k more. Don't go off of the "4 million accounts", because a majority of those are unactives that are still counted, people who paid months in advanced but quit, RMT etc.
And as other people have said before, XIV can't retain subs. It doesn't help that everything is instanced, cross server, so you never really make the lasting friendships that you did in XI, which can keep people playing too. I used to have a pretty decent sized friendslist back in 2.0. Only 2 of those ever log on anymore.

If they ever get rid of the rotation system, it would fix a lot of issues with combat.
Not really, depending on what you're trying to correct. It's a bit ingrained on top of existing mechanics that you need a flowing combat/rotation to make it work in both functionality and balance.

This is awesome. I was a blm in XI. The chart doesn't even show lvl 76-99 abilities and spells, as well as the subjob possibilities.
Hating something is an opinion. You must have never got to the lvl cap based on your comments, also in XI you did not spam 1 skill. Do some homework on the depth of just one job. Multiple gear sets and weapon skill mods, you must have played for an hour.
Here's another 'Fact.' - I hated XI. Forcing players to party just to level past 10, and even then it was nothing more than a grind at that. Depending on the class you were playing as you had all of one role. Generally just to spam one skill over and over. So if that repetitiveness didn't bore you, and what FFXIV provides does.. I honestly have nothing to say.
If the devs copy and pasted a few pieces of end game content from 11 to this game, I bet all of you arguing for no change, would love it.
I like how FFXI BLM has an actual spell list.
