FFXI was PS2 and PC and Xbox 360.Are you sure this happened?
I'm just interested if PS and MS ever had a game where cross-platform multiplayer was allowed between the two before.
I never played Burnout Paradise myself, but everything I Google about it says that cross-platform multiplayer was not allowed and that PS3 users could only play with PS3 users and 360 players could only play with 360 players. Stuff about making sure to buy the version with "whoever your friends list is bigger" for on PS3 or Xbox because you wouldn't be able to play together.
Was it maybe a different game?

Good for SE. They got 190k more users by releasing the X360 version then they have to continue supporting this version for years.
Wasn't it a good lesson for them? Still want to bring FFXIV to the Bone? Hey if you don't want to bring new games to the PS Vita because of business reason then you shouldn't even think about XIV on the Bone. FFXV and KH3 should be cancelled for the Xbone as well. If I'm their CEO I'll finalize my order right now.
I should have gone with FFXI as my example instead of Burnout Paradise. I was wanting to include a PS3/360 cross play example, but FFXI is a better example since it's easily verified and doesn't depend on my sketchy memory, except it's PS2 & Xbox, not PS3...
I tripped over this news story about DCUO allowing PC/PS4 cross play in January, and talking about Xbox One getting DCUO this spring. Considering the timing of the MS announcement, I can't help but suspect that DCUO will allow PC, PS4 and Xbox One players to play together as well.
All this goes back to the simple point that this announcement from MS is not about bridging XBL to any other gaming network, it's about allowing Xbox One to talk to 3rd party game servers outside of XBL. So now Xbox One will catch up to PS2, PS3 and PS4 in being able to connect to servers outside their own proprietary network.
