Well, a Tank can heal/dps. However it makes sense. If they make Red Mage, a light-armor/robe wearing, spell-based class into a Tank, without damaging the class identity (or making it a Fencer) I'll take my hat off for the devs.
Probably, Red Mage will be either a Healer (with Black Magic for attacking and White Magic for healing, using melee skills for MP management) or a support DPS (like they have always been for the past 13 titles).
Making them a take makes the most sense, because they are melee/they heal/and use spells. Which role does all 3? Tank.
They are not melee. A tank is a main-melee role, Red Mages CAN deal melee damage, but they're focused on spellcasting (and we all know from Clemecy that casting while tanking is a pain). Proof of that is their most iconic skill in the series, Dualcast. Also, a Red Mage wearing full-plate armor like the lv25 and lv35 sets is just wrong.
Something of interest for those who have not been able to play the Zodiac version of FFXII: The Red Mage job in that game, while for the most part what you would expect of it, was given the Arcane Magicks that only they can use. While Arcane was also in the regular version many of the spells were reclassified as Time Magick in Zodiac, while the Ardor spell (powerful fire magick) was reclassified to Arcane, and thus Red Mage exclusive. The Dark line and Death spells were made up the rest of Arcane. Possibly they may pull from XII to help make Red Mage here unique, and while the Dark line of spells probably will not be added because of Dark Knight, that still leaves them with Ardor, Death, and some of the spells reclassified to Time that haven't already been taken by Astrologian. They also wielded Maces as a main weapon, and (funnily enough givin the Dark spells) Greatswords. This could also mean, more so if they do end up being Tanks, a Red Mage pulling quite a bit from XII may have Pld/Drk as their cross class instead of Pld/Mrd.
Yes, that is why that whilst they melee they mostly use their spells to acquire aggro.
They can use Black Magic to use aoes that pull threat.
They can use fencing melee for defense and attack (RAPIER was designed to do this.)
They can use White Magic for protection. Stoneskin, and Wind to repel attacks and heal.
In "this" game. A Healer or Black Mage in melee = death.
They would have to have some kind of damage reduction.
And if they were "support"ish like Bard and Gunner they would also be worse because they don't have the DPS of lancer but have to get up close and personal to deal maximum damage.
Your saying: "Well they can stand back and use spells"
Well, why not take a Summoner or Black Mage then?
WELL they are also a healer:
"Why not take a real healer then with cleric stance?"

My version of RDM has Sch and Thm for cross class since it'll cover some healing and boosts spell casting. All on the assumption it provides most of its own physical attacks and some minor magical range or buffs.
We know that Samurai and Red Mage are coming? Where was this confirmed at?
Red Mage is going to be an absolute disaster for them regardless of how they implement it, due to the nature of Red Mages and the fact people are going to be upset if they're not X or Y.
How do you guys absolutely know that red mage and samurai are indeed coming. Where did square-enix say this? I have yet to see them say anything of the like. So if you guys can link where they said this I'd appreciate it.
I don't have any links on-hand, but I remember in many posts from even before HW came out with info that the only reason we don't have Samurai right now is because they were deciding between it and Dark Knight (which made the cut). To many this points to Samurai being highly likely to come with 4.0. If there is more actual info on this I do not know.
Red Mage I believe was also discussed by devs, and as said in some other threads (like the one about general speculation of future jobs I believe), Red Mage is the only original FF job not yet in this game. If we continue to get three jobs per xpac Red Mage also has a good chance of being added in the next one.
This added with the heavy hinting at the Rising event where Yoshi-P directly name dropped Samurai and two of the devs were arguing over which comes first, Red or Blue.I don't have any links on-hand, but I remember in many posts from even before HW came out with info that the only reason we don't have Samurai right now is because they were deciding between it and Dark Knight (which made the cut).
