    I think it has more to do with the direction they simply chose for this particular iteration of XIV. As much as I like to get the full potential out of a traditional job, gameplay-wise, I don't see any advantage in messing with the design they've set forth so far (the triangular relationship of fire and ice in relation to mana, and lightning separate and medial), especially when elements in this game have no inherent value (or arguably, mob weaknesses aside, in any FF game).

    As a avid FF fan, it still rubs me the wrong way when i used Fire spells on bomb-like mobs xD It just looks...wrong, though i reckon it would be a complete mess to add mob weaknesses to the game now.
