Why is "It's something to do" apparently a valid defense?

There is no point in arguing with people who defend this quest. Instead you should pity them, for they live lives with low standards. They are the kind of people who would jump to SE's defence if in 3.2 SE removed all dungeons and raids from the game and made eso tomes available only by doing 100 FATEs for 1 eso tome, and they would lap it up and applaud SE, while barking out their same old "don't do it then" argument. That it is neither about the grind or the investment, but rather about the fact that there is nothing new or original in this quest at all and that it is just making us grind to oblivion the same stuff we've grinded the past six months during content draught, is something that just goes completely over the defenders' heads. The fact that people wouldn't mind the grind at all if it actually felt fresh and provided a good reward for the effort involved, is something that just blows their feeble minds.

So, don't argue with the defenders. Pity them and their cursed lives of low standards and low expectations, where they are content never demanding a developer to step up their game and provide better or new for the money we monthly give them. The developers could take a dump in their laps and they would fall on their knees and thanks them for it.

To the defenders, I say, give SE the number to your bankaccount. You might as well just do that if you're zealously going to defend every lazy, uninspired decision they make. How does it feel to be a mindless cashcow being milked dry while getting naught in return but the same thing you've had during ARR for 5 patches straight? I thought we were in HW now, not in ARR-content-recycled-again-for-the-fifth-time-because-the-developers-can't-bother-with-actual-new-HW-content-to-make-a-satisfying-new-questline.

back in 2.1 everyone complained that the relic is too hard, titan too strong, only elitist can get it, why cant we have a grind to settle fair conditions?
there were tons of threads and complaints about the "too high difficulty"

thats why they made every step a grind + it revives old content

It seems the missing of the point is caused by a form of disease that is apparently contagious, as it is spreading and has already claimed another forum member by the name of ServerCollapse, who's failure to grasp the point was per chance even more spectacular than the one only a few moments earlier, as well as several other unfortunate souls. The fact it's a grind isn't why people are criticising the 'content'. If the Heavensward 50-60 MSQ consisted of you having to do the same exact ARR dungeons and trials would you defend it by going 'well the last MSQ had you doing dungeons so I won't expect this one to be different'?

The dev team have glued their fingers on ctrl, c and v but the PR team is amazing, gotta give it do them. You've got this borderline cult of Yoshida, the belief that the more money they'll spend on the game, the more funding it will recieve (and use it to justify anything), I've read people believe Yoshida when he says that he'll never let the game go F2P like he'd tell his costumers to drop the sub and just wait for the game to be free (and like he has any choice in the matter), now there's this new narrative of the dev team being a small group of geniuses whose limitless talent is being held back by SE, not to mention the 2 years old excuse of the miracle they pulled with AAR (guess what, if they didn't suck so much in the first place they wouldn't have had to), PS3 limitations...

They'll believe anything as long as a community rep tells them it's good for the game, even when it's painfully clear it's not.

If next patch you start over with a lvl1 character and no items or gear you'll have people call SE generous for making us revisit the storyline and leveling without having to make an alt.
