If the relic weapons stayed relevant like FFXI they would be worth the grind.

I keep hearing this and let me tell you this:

I absolutely remember everyone in XI whining when Empyrean weapons came out that their relics were no longer best in slot and it was sooooooo unfair because the grind for Empyrean was weak compared to the grind for relic. Many people quit because of it, in fact. Relics became irrelevant until they eventually added the 99 version, which also had its own separate insane grind. "Abyssea killed the game" refers in part to the fact that relics were obsoleted.

And suddenly to be the best on bard or paladin, you had to have a relic AND an Empyrean. Do you know how awful it was to be a 75 Gjallarhorn bard and be told you weren't good enough since they wanted a 3 song or 4 song (Empyrean) bard instead? T_T

I eventually did both a relic and the Empyrean for my bard. The grinds in XIV don't hold a candle to that XI put you through. 3 months to relic completion? It was 3 years in XI.
