Perhaps these days' MMO gamers realize that XI style gear cycle was nothing but lazyness from SE, where they would make one single "raid" every expansion and just place the carrot really far ahead by grueling special currency farming and the crappiest drop rates. Maybe these days MMO gamers actually demand content to be supplied often, instead of crap drop rates that force them to do the same dungeon over and over and over and over...

Also, perhaps these days MMO gamers are no longer mostly nolifers, but regular gamers. The kind who play non MMOs as much and as hard as any MMO nerd wants to believe that only he can, but not necessarily can or want to sink their lives into a MMO.

    That's probably a fair point.

But what's the point of releasing content anyway if no one wants to do it? This is what will happen if you make your carrots obsolete every so often.

keeping all content relevant , even old content, is important, especially for a slow company like SE.

Even given the possibility that there might be a replacement for the particular item I am going for in a raid I as someone who enjoys endgame would still do it. So would 99.99% of other people who like endgame. Some of my favorite memories from endgame in XI are tied to mobs that honestly had crap drops, but Dynamis? Other than the first time we beat each zones Dynamis became hell trying to get my Relic weapon. That is by far my worst memory of XI's endgame.

But hey at least all the Relic weapons were totally worth it and never replaced.... right?

I'm probably not going to do content multiple times if no one needs something from it, but I don't think that is what will happen/they are saying at all.

i think the majority won't even do them at some point, yeah people will want to do them to see them and complete them but after a few times seeing there gear go to the dogs and having to get new set they will stop caring. stop logging in even or worrying about it. and in reality most players in mmo's don't put things together, they take invites. if no one is putting stuff together they are sitting on there tuck-us just asking if there will be a run any time soon? so 8man forced runs ...gear becomes pointless, u really think people will be doing nearly as much as they would of if it was full linkshell events that gear stayed usefull for long periods of time. yeah create lots of dungeons, but on top of this ..make them for materia or make gears stack or bind together from the new dungeons and the epic endgames.

also don't make crafted gear better, make some slots craft, some large scale stuff that lasts long time, and some that needs replacing alot from small man dungeons, that way we get a good taste of it all if anything.

The fact that other MMOs with short gear cycles have very healthy populations disagrees with you.

but they are all twidling there thumbs waiting for content are they not? i personally wouldn't even pay to keep my account open, i'd shut it down and wait till there is enough content, and then probably be like screw this dungeon i'll keep playing tera or gw2 or diablo3, or swtor. then wait for the next one since it don't really matter.

well... you can do whatever you want

Maybe the guys from tera, gw2 and swtor will come play FFXIV once they are done with their 3monthly dungeon.

"Oh but other MMOs have an Auction House and they have healthy populations, which means an Auction House is why people play the MMOs!"

That logic is such a fallacious one.

From all I have heard this is exactly what they plan on doing. There are long term goals and short term goals. They can both exist in the same endgame, it is a good thing.

Making dungeons drop materia is good because at least then it isn't replacing the base gear itself nor the other potential materia slots from other dungeons.
