I think we can all agree that in a "go slow or wipe it" scenario, the tank is completely in the right^^
But the OP was more about preference, so basically "slow" runs with a group that could handle bigger pulls/less pauses just fine, but doesn't do them because the tank doesn't like big pulls. I queue with an FC friend from time to time, an awesome BLM. I'm a pretty good BLM too, so if we get a decent healer and nicely equipped tank, it irks me to no end when the tank pulls 1 or 2 mobs at a time. Yeah, SMN may have taken our AoE god title away, but we are still one of the best AoE classes in the game. Why are you forcing us to attack a group of less than 3 monsters? ;-;

But of course I agree that dps/healers pulling is not the right way to communicate that need for bigger groups to the tank, although I probably did it once or twice in my life .-.
(and obviously regreted it afterwards because I remembered how much I hate it when people do that when I tank xD)

None of this is targeted directly at HalfLegend, he already stated on page 2(?) that he is actually not a slow tank at all, just slower than some would like it.
I think at this point we have to make a destinction between an honest, thought-through need for bigger pulls and someone just storming off on the very first pull. The first takes the group's ability into consideration, the second is just an idiot who won't be pleased either way.

@all the people who say "communication is key":
Yes, totally! But my rule of thumb is to never expect anything out of DF groups ever. Never assume they will communicate their needs verbally, or discuss strategies on their own. So take the matter into your own hands right from the start and ask them. If there is no answer, they can't complain afterwards. As someone said in this thread already, a skilled tank finds a pace that keeps everyone comfortable based on the group's ability. It seems like tanks who do that rarely have others pull ahead. Well, except for the few idiots who do it regardless of what you do
Like that one healer HalfLegend had.
