You can join a FC that has housing, and get a room with in that house, or wait for more lots that will be available, but honestly If housing is what is making or breaking the game for you... then.. ya I don't know. If this thread is about just the way housing works, then why the hell is it titled the way it is?
As far as long term investments go, it really depends on what you consider a long term investment, you can level every single class/job to level 60. That is a huge character investment, even more so if you attempt to gear them all, even more so if you try to hit all achievements, even MORE so if you try to get good at playing every single one etc... it is really about what you want out of the game.
Either way, all MMOs will die, that is a fact... always. Might take some time, but some day somewhere everything you worked for will vanish. If you think what you have accumulated as the investment, then ya, ur gonna be disappointed eventually, it is digital items. If you think the journey and the challenge and the the fun factor of obtaining all those things is where the investment is, then there is tons to do, experiment with etc...
Really in the end, it is truly about you, and what you want out of a game, no amount of you coming here asking for advice will change that.
As far as housing getting revoked w/e it is what it is. /shrug I don't think it is a big deal personally.

Here a ideal people most likely won't like it either, but they can have 2 options. 1. Leave it at the 45 days that you have to enter your house or lose it. or 2. Treat houses like extra retainers and pay a X amount of money on top of your sub and not have to worry about losing it. Since lot of saying I pay a sub which so does everyone else so this would validate their pov. For the people that want to go on break and not pay their sub will option two will still be no use to them so guess they still stuck with option 1.
Do we really have to give Devs even more ideas how to douple dip us?2. Treat houses like extra retainers and pay a X amount of money on top of your sub and not have to worry about losing it. I don't like this idea. LOL
45 days is still generous and seems like a fair amount of time. (It is 45 right?)
You can unsub for a month then come back, walk back in , go unsub again. At that point you are essentially paying just to keep the house already since you aren't playing. To add to that, you are not even enjoying the house because you are not in game using it.
I guess if a house is THAT important to you when you are NOT playing and NOT interacting with it then ya, that's what you gotta do is commit to 6 months of a year.... OR join a FC, where you can take a break come back and people have still been entering while you were gone lol.

Me: "Aww man I'm clicking all the wrong buttons tonight!"
Friend: "You're i190, you can't click a wrong button unless it is no buttons"
Me: "lol"
I agree that the 45 days is enough and that it not really that important to them if they not bothering to play the game or interact with it in anyway if they are playing. I was just throwing out an ideal cause I'm tired of seeing the "I pay for the right to have a house" when they pay the same sub as everyone else.I don't like this idea. LOL

The housing thing isn't anything different than oldschool Ultima Online used to have. If you actually play the game at all, you won't lose your house. If you're not playing the game, you will. I never lost a house on UO because it took no effort to refresh its status. It's such a non-issue, and UO's years of doing it to good effect prove so.
FYI for anyone saying, "well if they gunna take away our house then following that logic they should also delete our characters if we don't play!!! See how bad that sounds?!?"
Some MMOs do delete your character if you don't play for x amount of time. One being Furcadia which has been around since 1996. It's still patching/updating to this day.
