Hot&Cold mini-game? Oh wait...
Just an idea, maybe when entering an attempt to make a HQ item the view could switch to first person, your mouse pointer then controls the crafting tool you are using and you move it around the item click on certain things in some kind of way that would seem feasible for the relative craft, which could result in failure or success.
E.G/ Move a culinaries frying pan around on the hob trying to find the 'hot-spot'.
Cut a certain part of a bow using the carpenters saw to saw out it's imperfections.
This is how many hand-made crafts in real-life try to better improve their items and their skill at making these items. It's how a blacksmith learns how to make a straighter sword blade or an armourer learns how to make a better curved shoulder plate.
