Samurai though, makes more sense as a DPS.
Yes, the class known for wearing heavy armor and having one of the most powerful defensive abilities in the game when tanks weren't even a thing (blade grasp) makes much more sense as a dps than a class that's never been a front line character in any iteration and at most has worn "medium" armors and held a jack of all tradesey supportey role.

Reason YOSHI-P decided to go for Dark Knight was because it didn't fit with the theme of heavensward and they though it would be out of place to have a character like that on a environment like Ishgard. Aside from that I've never seen him or read or view him saying that he wants samurai to be a dps on any of the live letter, but what ut was obvious it was that the initial intended class for samurai was TANK, whether that changes on the future only time will tell but samurai was tank not a DPS even on XI was intended to be a TANK but we all know what happened there...

Yes, he did say that SAM was considered for the heavensward tank class. However, he also said that because they went with DRK they will probably not make SAM also into a tank. He also stated that he had personally preferred as melee DPS anyway. No, I don't want to go scour the internet to find it. Anyhow, while it does make a lot of sense for SAM to be a tank, I don't think it will turn out that way.

I also don't think we'll be getting more than 2 jobs for the xpac. Pretty sure there was some mention of how difficult it was to get all 3 jobs in for heavensward and they didn't want to kill themselves trying to repeat for the next xpac. So I'm expecting 1-2 jobs at the xpac (SAM/RDM) and maybe some other job introduced midway thru heavensward if we're lucky.

I'd prefer it to be a tank but I can live if it winds up a str based melee with fun mechanics. Make it easier for me to need dem str accs XD

I just think mechanically it could be a very refreshingly different sort of tank in how it plays. Drk feels to much like pld with mp management mechanics stapled on for me to really enjoy it. If pld gets buffed I might even make that my secondary over drk, and I never thought I'd say that about a greatsword class.

I do think you're probably right about only 2 classes per xpac from now on(1 dps per xpac and then alternate healer and tank). I feel like just 1 isn't enough, it'll be ninja bloat all over again.

So... you're saying there aren't enough damage dealing classes already, and adding them at a faster rate than healers or tanks is a good idea?

Honestly, theres enough classes of all of them. They've covered most of the bases on tanks and healers too. Really anything beyond this point is gonna be fluff. Additionally tanks and healers are harder to balance content around.

Don't forget that it's a Final Fantasy game. There's nowhere near enough jobs in XIV for a Final Fantasy game. Nowhere near. And honestly there is still a lot of different MMO class concepts to explore that are still not in XIV. Tho I agree that tanks and healers are harder to balance than DPS. In the next expansions, we're most likely gonna see new DPS release at a faster pace than new tanks/healers. I think that when XIV will be "finished" (like XI is now basically), we may have something like 5 tanks and healers at maximum. I hardly see more than that.

At the end of the day the dps role is most popular, and will interest more people more than adding tanks and healers at an accelerated rate. And while there's a lot of dps overall, any particular niche(melee/physical ranged/magic) has as many or less roles than tanks or healer. And they haven't even touched the mad concept of a dps that blurs the line between melee and ranged dps yet. If I had my way we'd see a ton of new tank classes. That just isn't a very realistic perspective though.

Edit: also after seeing how similar drk is to pld mechanically, I don't mind waiting longer for more tanks so long as they're more entertaining & interesting mechanically.

Your probably right about the number of jobs increasing. I just hope it doesnt become someone adding a "job" in just to make sure it's there. Even 5 would be pushing the limit of balance for the devs. I just hope we see some more obscure stuff.
