I'm guessing that the Garleans had already been reverse engineering Allagan technology, but the capture of Ala Mhigo gave them the massive leap in technology that they needed to create Magitek.

Well, there is also stuff like Bozja Citadel, which seemed to be a rushed rehash of Crystal Tower, in order for them to make contact with Dalamud and spur the events of our most recent Calamity, so they've definitely had access to Allagan knowledge for a long while. As I recall Bozja went boom around the same time as the Battle of Silvertear Skies (which lead me to believe Midgardsormr attacked the Garleans there simply because they just attempted to recreate Crystal Tower, and were now moving towards its resting place, two and two, not hard to put together), and I doubt one builds such a thing over night. So yeah, I'm incline to think their sudden turn from obscure little settlement to technologically superior empire has something to do with finding Allagan artifacts. Perhaps Ala Mhigo discoveries resulted in the more recent stuff, but they've absolutely had access to Allagan secrets for a while.

The answer is coming in 3.X, I think, but man does he have a lot of explaining to do...

Certainly been my favorite question for a while... (and I still haven't given up on the Twelve still being a load of old hogwash, you see the Cathedral in Azys Lla with symbols for Azeyma, I see the intro cinematic for World of Darkness and see a symbol representing Xandes new "love"... Azys Lla... Azey Lla... Azeyma... Also explains why a nation of Void Mages might pick up the same "deity", I mean we've had it from the dragons mouth, Primals are just bastardizations of belief, rather than anything "real", if Icehearts Shiva wasn't the real thing, why would old Lous Twelve be any different?)

My current theory, given Midgardsormr is a dragon, how dragons perceive time differently, and the fact that he isn't just a dragon, he is a magical space dragon, is that Hydaelyn has been having him fill out application forms for him and his brood to seek asylum here.

Although in all seriousness, when we went to see him, he complained at us for waking him up, so I'm still incline to think he is just lazy. If he could have repeated the Battle of Silvertear Skies at any point in history, we'd have a much happier story... And if he was meant to be guarding Eorzeas wellspring of Aether... Yeah, my first instinct wouldn't be to crash a warship into it... His a bad parent to boot, given what went down with Bahamut and Tiamat... Let Tiamat get involved with the wrong crowd, clearly didn't hug Niddy enough, then he doesn't even visit them for who knows how long...
