I don't think I've ever comm'd a healer that only cared about DPS and let the tank sit at less than half health.
Conversely, I'd rather get the run done then have someone cause a wipe.

If I know I have tetra, beni and the Tank has HG why do I need to overheal? Plus it's always mildly amusing when you see a less experienced Tank panic when they hit 25% HP XD.
I wasn't exactly singling healers out specifically, but I've seen more wipes from scholars specifically than I have WHM . Doesn't really change that I'd rather get the run completed than riska wipe, but eh.
The healer should get a feeling for how much damage you take, and then stop his/hers DPS to heal you before that is even a risk.
And then you sometimes run into tanks that it just impossible to DPS with, since they take too much damage.
Today, I ran into a pleasant DRK who was mostly out of Grit, and I could still do Bio II, Miasma, Bio, Bane, Swiftcast, Shadowflare before I went and healed him, and at that time he was usually 40%.
If he stayed in Grit, and I only did healing, I could probably write these forums post between my heals.
tl;dr the healer should grasp the limits of the group to not cause a wipe.
You seem to be conflating being a bad healer with DPSing aggressively.
- If your healer allowed you to die for a reason that was within his or her control, then they played poorly.
- If your healer kept you topped off 100% of the time by spamming unnecessary heals and failing to help with DPS, then they played poorly.
- If your healer met the healing requirement of the encounter and DPSed when it made sense to do so, then they did their job.
That's about it.
