Id say its theft, yes it may be open and free to take but I'd like to think FCs who do that say "Take what you need, not what you want" kinda deal. Or by default have new entries done like WoW as I recall and only be able to take like X number of things a day out.

It's also deterrent for those thinking about it.
But the person didn't do anything against the rules. It wasn't technically theft because the items were open for anyone to take, not that there are any rules against in-game theft anyway.

While it wasn't really a "nice" thing to do, and the "thief" is somewhat to blame, it's actually more the FC leader's fault. He didn't set permissions, so by not doing so he effectively gave permission to take anything in there. Consider a benevolent player who takes and uses everything he has access to in the FC, since that's obstensibly what it's for. Only difference is he doesn't quit. What's your reaction then? Are you going to make him pay for everything he used? That's hardly fair, since he was given free access to it.

On paper the 'Thief' did nothing wrong. However, leaving the FC immediately after raiding its coffers invokes enough suspicious behavior to warrant an investigation. As players we usually don't have access to enough information to prove guilt or innocence. However, it is amazing how many people admit their guilt when a GM views their chat logs at the time of the supposed 'crime.' They aren't innocent anymore if they've admitted to doing something with cruel intentions. Remember: Motive and behavior also determines guilt!

Of course anything I say is pretty much ignored; so let's take a commercial break and listen to a word from our sponsor!

I never said anything about letting a plumber into one's abode without being there to watch them. It's entirely possible for anyone to enter your house (invited) and steal shit whilst your back is turned, or even right under your nose, if they're good at it, so your argument is flawed, and you're showing utter naivety if you think that you being in the room with someone means they can't possible steal from you. Whilst some people do play the victim, most people don't, and actually are the victim.

Agreed, though I think a better comparison is:

You are hired to join a Company. On your first day of work you take all of the toilet paper and hand soap from the bathrooms and all of the office supplies from the storage room. You pack it all into your car before lunch and quit your job without telling anyone. The supplies were a shared resource, free for everyone to use, and you were even given permission to "take whatever you need." You didn't break any rules; however due to motive and behavior you can still be busted for theft.

OP it sucks you lost your stuff. At least now your FC leader will be more aware with rankings and lesson learnt ^^
