Typically this is the way the dungeons and trials work for the MSQ but he shouldn't expect it. Sometimes parties have a lot of new people. It's in the OP's best interest to do the research if he doesn't want this to happen again.
There's really not much for a player to do in Ishgard if they haven't completed the MSQ anyways. You'd be able to do some sidequests, do some FATE's that reward sub-par exp, (I won't go into jobs, as I think their gating merits an entirely different discussion) but you'll hit a wall requiring story progression anyways. The MSQ is the fastest way to bring your character to 60, and unlocks most of the dungeons along the way, but you won't enjoy the superior writing or have any investment with the characters without having experienced 2.0's story. Even if you grinded to 60 without it, you would have nothing to do because both level 60 dungeons and Alexander require completion of the 3.0 MSQ, not to mention you would have to furnish all of your own gear as well.
I understand your frustrations, but Heavensward is not a standalone game. It's a direct continuation of 2.0. Try not to feel pressured to rush the game faster than your own pace, because it will only sap your enjoyment.
Also, I'm in favor of increasing incentives for trial roulettes, since several MSQ required battles are in it. It should be quickly populated and offer substantial enough rewards to give people a bit more tolerance for mistakes.
This strategy of requiring story completion to play new expansions cannot continue on past this one. If the next expansion (4.0) requires you to complete all of 2.x and all of 3.x, then they might as well slap a "new players need not apply" sticker on the box. That's too steep a mountain to climb just so a new player can enjoy "current" content.
What about 5 years from now, when we have several expansions? "FINALLY convinced my wife to play the game with me! I'm hoping to have her caught up by next February..."
And that whole "it's a Final Fantasy game, you should expect it" argument is such BS. You didn't have to clear Chains of Promathia to visit Whitegate. You didn't have to finish Aht Urhgan to unlock scholar. Final Fantasy XIII-2 doesn't require a completed save file from the first game just to play.

First not all people need that fight and most likely they left because they have beat the fight 1 billion times already and felt it was faster to just re-q to get the tomes they q'ed for.
Second get use to the long q time since you are a dps. Dps always get the short end of the stick when it comes to q times.
It seems the further along you get in this game the more impatient some become.
Later on you will run it to people that will kick you for not doing enough dps or not tanking / healing to the standards they feel are acceptable.
I am not saying that all people are like that but, I am saying you will without a doubt encounter this during your game time so you might want to harden up a bit or you wont last.
If there's one thing I learnt from playing FFXIV...
Are there adds? Yes.
Did you kill? No.
Did you get one shot? Yes, if No, then continue facerolling boss.
If yes, should you kill adds? Yes.
10charrrrr
Sadly, yes :/ People ragequit at the simplest things, even tiny mistakes anyone can make and they demand you know the content within an hour of it releasing, to which they ragequit if you wipe. Not everyone, but it's a good majority, which cross server instancing for everything is to blame. It allows people to be whiny ragequitters / jerks and get away with it since they can just queue up again with randoms.
>_> I miss the days on mmos of having to do everything with people on your server, when being a jerk got you kicked from stuff and everyone knew you. Less ragequitting, more people with patience.
I Remember those days, "Oh my friends already ran earlier today.. looks like I spend 6 hours going LFG then"
Op, put yourself in party finder for an undersized party. The trial drops loot so people will join. Once you get 4 people queue up and curb stomp the fight.
