In a way both X and XII summons were basically a pet class. In X's case a very OP one except for certain battles (and even then it had enough time to do the original version of "giant attack animation"), while XII was toned down a bit from that and basically always on Sic.

Unless you played the Zodiac Job System, then you could play as the Summon and could freely use their Astral Flow.
