That said, I'm getting the feeling that he could escape the moment someone uses the Eye as a way to release the aether within (like the Aetheric Ram or blade of light), and by that point he may have absorbed a fair amount amount of Nidhogg's aether. Of course, that's assuming aether in the Eyes is stored over time and not simply consumed.
If he is indeed still alive within the eye then there are several different ways they could go with the character from here. I imagine we'll be pursuing Nidhogg in an attempt to free Estinien; it would be an interesting twist to have us rescue him only to discover Lahabrea hitched a ride in his body on the way out.

To expand on this, each 'house' of lesser Ascians each follow one of the primary ones. Those of the 12th Chalice are confirmed to follow Lahabrea in the SMN 60 quest. We were also informed that they do not have the ability to retreat to the Ascian HQ between worlds and they cannot possess living hosts (only dead ones) which means killing a lesser Ascian with no corpses around to switch to will actually kill them permanently.
