Belhi has it correct -
Nanamo was not just going to abdicate and abolish the monarchy completely, she was also going to abolish the Syndicate as well who wielded the true power in Ul'dah, in favour of a (presumably democratically elected) republic, meaning both Lolorito and Teledji would have been the big losers (along with their wealthy colleagues). Hence the assassination - it removed that final annoying (in their eyes) stubborn thorn in their side to total control of Ul'dah while maintaining their status quo. It was basically a power struggle, which sadly Nanamo and the Royalists lost.
Unfortunately for us though, we were kind of dragged into it.
