If you must gamble with an AoE, my experience says that you have better chances if you try passing through as little of it as possible (try the edges of a circle, rather than straight through, for instance) as quickly as possible (maximize the distance). My testing is very informal (using jump in T10, Shoulder Tackle through Earthshakers in T13) but I'm pretty sure the game plots out a line for your path somehow, else you wouldn't have things like being unable to gap-close through walls.

    * Or poorly chosen. Many a DRG has dreamed of jumping over a Twister....
Well, I'll have to test this again but I did Steel Vigil(the low level one) a few times when I would Shukuchi straight through the ice on the ground.
Those give you heavy and cause damage, but I didn't get the debuff or retain damage after.
That boss in particular gets surrounded by ice with two melee. I can't reach her anymore? Shukuchi to the other side where there's space, no consequence and faster than walking around.

I've actually used Shukuchi like that a lot because I assumed it was a feature and don't remember ever retaining damage through AoEs.
Monks do seem to take damage under the same conditions but I'm not sure about jump.

This is just for general ground aoe. It's possible things like Twister and Titan's Landslide may function differently.
The game does seem to plot your path, but it doesn't need to register your character's travel through it. Maybe an exception is made for more critical mechanics.

Sucks for avoiding AoE, but it seems pretty strong for reposition since it ignores a lot of ground effects.
Or that's how I've been using it.

Doesn't work on the black ground AoE in turn 11 during add phase. Shukuchi through it, get heavy anyway, it's pretty lame.

That's too bad, I guess it can't be relied on.

Isgebind's Sheet of Ice AoEs don't Heavy you. They paralyze you if you didn't get out of the cast, but the ground AoEs just do damage--the debuff doesn't last once you leave, unlike the Frostbite from Cauterize (check out this goon standing in everything, but do note the footage is old, so the ground AoE debuff isn't in the floating text like it is in the game now).

The Gravity Node's AoEs are super noticeable since they apply the debuff if you enter in. It's not like a typical ground AoE damage effect where you'd just be gambling with tick timing. Good thing the Heavy isn't a big deal... usually.

As Sunny has pointed out some ground AoE relies on the global tick while others have an aura effect (some auras can place a timed debuff as well). Best just to plan a clear path as often as possible on all classes with these abilities.

Unfortunately with latency being a factor this will always be an issue.
